As the world works to replace fossil fuels, wood pellets are playing a key role in decarbonizing power grids. European nations, in particular, have invested heavily in pellets for both heating and electricity generation. To supply this increased demand, global trade in pellets has doubled since 2012, with U.S., Canadian and European producers all playing a role.
How this supply stream may evolve is the focus of the "European Pellet Supply and Cost Analysis", a new study from RISI, an information provider for the global forest products industry.

What do biologists look for in a healthy forest? A diversity in the ages and composition of trees and occasional breaks in canopy to allow sunlight to reach understory plants. Healthy forests, just like healthy human populations, are sustained by a diversity of ages. Each group has a role to play in maintaining the whole community over the long term. But healthy, diverse forests are on the decline across the eastern United States. A lack of natural and human-induced disturbances because of fire suppression and certain timber harvest methods have led the forested landscape to become largely homogenous.

Certain southern states might be known for oil and gas production, but the region also is a major producer of a lesser-known energy source — wood pellets. The South this year was the nation's biggest producer of wood pellets, accounting for about 75 percent of the 3.1 million tons of pellets that are made from scraps from sawmills, logging operations and other wood product manufacturing, according to the Energy Department. Nearly all wood pellets produced in the region are exported overseas, primarily to Europe, where they are burned for utility-scale electricity generation.

The United States International Trade Commission said there is a "reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is materially injured by reason of imports of hardwood plywood from China that are allegedly subsidized and sold in the United States at less than fair value." Noting all six of its commissioners voted in favor, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue to conduct its antidumping and countervailing duty investigations on imports of hardwood plywood. A judgment on whether countervailing duties should be levied to discourage the imports is due Feb. 13, and its preliminary antidumping duty determination due on or about April 27.

In the face of the likely rise in costs, Ontario's new cap and trade system may also present opportunities for northern residents, said Warren Mabee, director of Queen's Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy. Mabee thinks there may be a chance for the forest industry to adapt and benefit by selling carbon offsets.

Farmers are not in the know about the opportunity forestry can offer in an uncertain post-Brexit world, according to the forestry sector. The opportunities presented by planting trees — or by starting to actively manage existing woodland on farms — have received a low level of attention.
