Prior to the Forest Products Society's 72nd International Convention, plan to attend the Introduction to Wood Short Course covering the basics of wood science from the field's leading professors.
The course will be held at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and includes a tour. After the course, attendees can return to the Monona Terrace for the International Convention keynote address and welcome reception. This course is ideal for industry professionals without a formal degree in wood science.

A total of 700,000 acres of Montana national forests burned in this summer's wildfires. The Montana Wood Products Association (MWPA) is planning to salvage about 30,000 of those acres, MWPA's executive director Julia Altemus told hundreds of people Tuesday. New research from a Florida State University scientist has revealed a surprising relationship between surging atmospheric carbon dioxide and flower blooms in a remote tropical forest. FSU researchers studying the rich tropical forests of Panama's Barro Colorado Island found that climbing rates of carbon dioxide have set the stage for a multidecade increase in overall flower production.

The outbreak of spruce beetle infestation in north-central B.C. rose to record-breaking levels in 2017, and the latest government data shows no sign of it slowing down. Aerial surveys revealed 340,000 hectares of forest are now impacted by the beetle — more than 45 times the pre-outbreak levels of 7,653 hectares recorded in 2013.
