Clearing swaths of rainforests can permanently drive away or kill off birds that are important partners in the regeneration of the forest, the study finds. The study surveyed 330 sites in the Brazilian Amazon, turning up 472 species of birds. The analyses demonstrate that recovering forests don't have the diversity of birds needed to ensure their survival.

Abstract submissions are still being accepted for the 2017 International Conference on Wood Adhesives, scheduled for Oct. 25-27 at the Sheraton Hotel in Atlanta.
The conference is designed to bring together industry professionals, academics and consultants with a special interest in adhesives for wood and biomass. This is the 11th in a series organized every four years by the U.S. Forest Service Products Laboratory, the Forest Products Society and the Wood Based Composites Center.
Presenters will participate in plenary, technical and poster presentations, tabletop exhibits and personal interactions with leaders in the field, addressing the following topics:
- Structure and properties of adhesive systems
- Bonding untraditional substrates
- New wood-based bonded products
- Bio-based and novel raw materials and adhesive systems, resin chemistry
- Issues with commercial implementation of new adhesives
- Impact of regulations and consumer preference
- Fundamental understanding of wood bonding and adhesive-substrate interactions
- Composites
- Modeling

With 400 million seedlings planted per year, spruce are Canada's most reforested trees. Now researchers have launched a $10.5 million research project to fund genetically improved tree breeding programs. Spruce trees are Canada's most significant forest resource because they grow in almost every region of country and are the largest species by number. Spruce trees also produce high-quality wood and fiber.

New housing starts in the U.S. were up to 1.1 million in 2016 and are expected to continue improving in 2017. But once again, Canadian lumber producers will be fighting for a share of that growing market at a time when the U.S. is applying countervailing duties against Canadian forestry companies. In a joint teleconference call, B.C. Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson and Council of Forest Industries (COFI) president Susan Yurkovich reiterated the Canadian stance: Americans need Canadian lumber and duties on Canadian softwood lumber will only increase costs for homebuilders and homeowners in the U.S.

When it comes to grass fires in Oklahoma, 2017 has not been a quiet year. The Oklahoma Forestry Services braced for the worst Monday. Luckily, high humidity and fog in the morning stuck around just long enough to prevent any major flare ups. Monday, the National Weather Services issued a red flag warning. Meanwhile, the Forestry Services worked with emergency management agencies around the state to have National Guard aircraft on standby in Lexington and Tulsa. They've brought in a task force of resources from Eastern Oklahoma, and positioned them in Shawnee where they are ready to assist any fire department in a grass fire.

Michael Wild, president of the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC), writes: "Right now, the question on people's minds is what 2017 might have in store for us. Yet, what we do know is that the turn from 2016 and 2017 seems to be a kind of watershed for the torrefaction industry."

Agricultural commodities — especially beef, palm oil, soy, and pulp and paper — have become an increasingly important driver of deforestation over the past couple decades, particularly in the tropics. While there's a lot of work left to be done, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 (TFA 2020) see momentum building toward a sea change in the global supply chain for these much-in-demand commodities. Overcoming the barriers to sustainable production of the big four commodities and supporting the transition to deforestation-free supply chains represents an investment opportunity that will "roughly total US$ 200 billion annually" by 2020, per a report.

China imported record-high volumes of softwood lumber in 2016 and softwood log imports reached their second highest level on record. Despite relatively pessimistic forecasts for wood demand early in 2016, China's need for imported wood picked up during the summer and fall with import volumes of both logs and lumber being up about 20 percent in the fourth quarter 2016 as compared to the fourth quarter 2015.
