With almost 70 percent of its land covered by forests, Japan is leading a drive to return to wood as a source of cleaner energy.
While projects in the U.K. and the U.S. are experimenting with biomass, Japan is giving favorable tariffs to power producers who burn leftover wood as a way to cut the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
It's a program that's so successful that local biomass producers already are having problems meeting demand, and researchers warn there may not be enough raw materials to feed the power stations now being planned. Some environmentalists even question whether the use of biomass is as carbon-free as advertised.

Biomass pellets can be derived from various sources including woody plants, timber industry, sawdust, sugarcane crop, and switch grass. It is commonly used as a heating fuel. The increasing use of biomass pellets in power industry is propelling the growth of the global biomass pellet market. The growing demand for renewable energy source is one of the important factors, which is supporting the adoption of biomass pellets in the power industry. The increased government initiatives and stringent environment regulations are the key drivers promoting the growth of the global biomass pellet market.

Demand for woody biomass for energy production is on the rise in developed nations, as publicly regulated utilities around the world shift from fossil and nuclear power to greener fuels. Global industrial wood pellet demand is expected to more than double by 2020 to about 29 million metric tons from about 13 million tons in 2015, according to industry analysts Hawkins Wright Ltd.

France will launch a tender for wood-fired power plants for a total of 50 megawatt (MW) per year for three years and a tender for biogas-fired plants for 10 MW per year for three years, the energy ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The tenders — which will close by Aug. 8 with project selection before the year end — will be open to wood-fired biomass plants with capacities below 25 MW and biogas plants with capacities below 5 MW. A fifth of the biomass tender will be reserved for projects smaller than 3 MW — which is about equivalent to one large wind turbine.

A new strategy for managing public lands for recreation, heritage and wilderness paints a bleak picture of the U.S. Forest Service's own ability to tackle the job. A 50-page document released last August got little notice outside the Region 1 Missoula, Montana, headquarters. But it had been more than a year in the drafting, and it has been signed by Regional Forester Leanne Marten, her deputies and the supervisors of all 10 national forests that report to her.

The Netherlands’ plans to rely on wood energy to produce electricity have been thrown into turmoil, with lawmakers fearing the program will waste money, hurt the environment and prolong the lives of polluting coal power plants. The burning of wood to produce electricity has been expanding across Europe, where it is heavily subsidized by national governments because it counts as renewable energy. Such energy can be environmentally friendly at local scales, but used on large industrial levels it can accelerate global warming, worsen deforestation, and push up wood and paper costs.

Lasers might not be the first things that come to mind when thinking of the conserving the environment. Nonetheless, they're being used to manage commercial forests more efficiently. The false-color image above was captured with a "laser radar" LIDAR (light detection and ranging) system from Irish company Treemetrics. The colors are a 2-D representation of 3-D data that reveals how dense and straight the trees are. This allows plantation managers to understand how many logs can be harvested from any given tree, and what their quality will be.
