Building on the successful launch of State of America’s Forests in December of 2017, the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities released three new packets of content on the interactive website, www.usaforests.org. A year of upheaval at the U.S. Interior Department has seen dozens of senior staff members reassigned and key leadership positions left unfilled, rules considered burdensome to industry shelved, and a sweeping reorganization proposed for its 70,000 employees. The evolving status quo at the agency responsible for more than 780,000 square miles (2 million square kilometers) of public lands, mostly in the American West, has led to praise from energy and mining companies and Republicans, who welcomed the departure from perceived heavy-handed regulation under President Barack Obama.

Third-generation biofuels research and development is largely focused on algae as a raw material. Early research demonstrated that energy yields from a given surface area are far greater from algae than from plants currently used in producing biofuels. The great potential of algae is, however, clouded by a number of technical and economic hurdles which must be overcome before algae contributes in any significant way to providing energy for transportation. Among these are reduction of nutrient requirements in cultivation and energy requirements in processing. For the near to mid-term, at least, algae-derived biofuels are unlikely to pose competitive risks to the emerging second-generation cellulose-based biofuels industry.

Softwood lumber duties aren't dampening the spirits of Canadian lumber producers as strong demand from rising U.S. housing starts and tight supply is expected to keep prices high throughout 2018.
The number of U.S. housing starts beat expectations by surpassing 1.33 million in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, with single family starts increasing 7.6 per cent. Housing permits approached 1.4 million.

It took the effort of over 100 firefighters all night to subdue a blaze at a Turman Tye Lumberyard in Virginia. Authorities are estimating more than $500,000 worth of lumber and equipment was destroyed. Efforts to control the fire were complicated by the nearest fire hydrant being located more than two miles away from the scene, reported local news sources. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

A bad winter is good business for locally based Lignetics. When the snow piles up and temperatures plummet, the local company's product line of wood pellets, fire logs and fire bricks fly off the shelves of retailers large and small. Until just a few years ago, however, Lignetics was completely reliant on regional weather patterns in the Pacific Northwest to carry the day. All that has changed with a strategic series of mergers and acquisitions that have given the company a national footprint and the largest market share of any manufacturer in the residential wood pellet industry.

Some varieties of wood, such as oak and maple, are renowned for their strength. But scientists say a simple and inexpensive new process can transform any type of wood into a material stronger than steel, and even some high-tech titanium alloys. Besides taking a star turn in buildings and vehicles, the substance could even be used to make bullet-resistant armor plates.

A key project to speed up and expand forest restoration in northern Arizona will now be delayed to a time uncertain. For the past year, stakeholders in the 2.4 million-acre Four Forest Restoration Initiative, or 4FRI, had been under the impression that the Forest Service was making progress on issuing a large-scale contract for tree thinning and forest biomass removal on up to 500,000 acres.
