The bills were put forward to further the development of tall timber buildings in the U.S., thereby supporting the nation's considerable timber market and the rural manufacturing jobs it entails.

More than 125 academics have joined the International Energy Agency Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Program (IEA Bioenergy) slamming Chatham House's recent report on bioenergy, "Woody Biomass for Power and Heat: Impacts on the Global Climate", calling it "misleading." The group of academics from across the world and the IEA state that the report "does not present an objective overview of the current state of scientific understanding with respect to the climate effects of bioenergy."

Global softwood lumber trade increased 12 percent year-over-year to reach a new record-high of 121 million m3 in 2016, per estimates by WRI. Since the global financial recession in 2009, there has been a steady climb in international trade of lumber, with shipments the past seven years having increased as much as 66 percent. While it is no surprise that China is a major driver for the dramatic rise in lumber shipments worldwide the past seven years, it is interesting to note that the U.S. has actually increased softwood lumber imports more than China.

Slave labor-analogous conditions were revealed by investigation of logging camps in Pará, Brazil. A supply chain investigation of the timber harvested through these camps has found links to markets in Brazil and the U.S. Major retailers with links to intermediaries that sourced wood from logging camps found to use slave labor practices include Lowe's, Timber Holdings, and Brazilian Wal-Mart stories. Timber Holdings has used wood from Brazil in major renovation projects for New York's Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.

Switzerland is not fully exploiting a significant source of clean energy: 173,000 metric tons of used wood could be reused producing valuable heat and power energy today, in addition to the 644,000 metric tons of used wood already being used. This was the conclusion reached by a nationwide survey conducted by the Swiss Federal Research Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) among 567 companies in the construction, waste management and transport sectors.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr announced the creation of the Federal–Provincial Task Force on Softwood Lumber, which will share information and analysis to understand potential impacts and assess how to address the needs of affected workers and communities. The forest sector is an important part of Canada's economy. It directly employs more than 200,000 people across Canada. Softwood lumber exports were valued at $8.6 billion in 2015 — close to 70 percent of which was exported to the U.S.

Volatile lumber prices are causing jitters in areas of the U.S. construction industry dependent on wood. Behind it is a long-running dispute over pricing practices in Canada that creates unfair competition in the U.S. So far there has been no solution, although deemed likely is a new trade agreement placing duties on Canadian imports of softwood lumber. The Structural Building Components Association has been following the issue closely.
