When you think of wooden buildings, you likely think of log cabins or New England clapboard cottages. But thanks to new technologies like treatments for bamboo or cross-laminated "engineered" timber, wood is stronger, lighter, fireproof, and more practical than ever before — an alternative to environmentally problematic materials like steel and concrete. In London, for example, Murray Grove is a nine-story residential building built entirely of wood. Welcome to the era of wooden skyscrapers.

Market participants in the North American wood products market are once again cautiously optimistic as they look to 2017. This caution continues to pervade the wood products markets as uncertainty from the ongoing softwood lumber trade negotiations between the USA and Canada, the uneven U.S. housing recovery and the potential for further OSB restarts stifle optimism.

Over the past few years, a number of states in the northeast U.S. have launched new programs that incentivize the market to switch from oil and propane heating to modern wood heating systems. Increasingly, modern wood heating is recognized as an effective strategy for measurably reducing the use of fossil fuels, while stimulating local economies and creating local markets for low-grade wood. Yet, there remains serious apprehension from state policy and rule makers about increasing wood heating due to concerns about air quality — specifically, particulate matter emissions. Fear of worsening air quality is a real barrier to expanding the region’s modern wood heating market.

The past month has seen a fierce international and academic debate flare again over the large-scale use of wood to produce energy, notably in Europe. When we agreed on forests and energy as the theme for this year’s International Day of Forests on March 21, we had no idea that there would be such a timely opportunity to share how forests and biomass can deliver crucial energy to support the livelihoods of billions of people, and at the same time provide major opportunities for our climate-smart future.
