At Linnaeus University Min Hu, Ph.D., has been studying timber for the future of sustainable building. The focus of this research is the stiffness of the boards, which is the governing engineering property in many structural applications. The suggested timber models in this research enable an accurate stiffness profile along timber boards, by which an effective IP to the stiffness can be established and used for the prediction of stiffness. This research will contribute to development of timber buildings, which offers major environmental benefits and contributes to a sustainable society.

Society of Wood Science and Technology
The Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) and the Japan Wood Research Society (JWRS) announce their joint International Convention, Nov. 5-9, at the Noyori Conference Hall, Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan.
The overall theme is "Era of a Sustainable World — Tradition and Innovation for Wood Science and Technology." Technical sessions offered range from Wood Physics and Timber Engineering to Wood in Health and Wellness and Advances in Cell Biology. Co-chaired by JWRS's Shigehiko Suzuki and SWST's Nicole Brown, this 61st Convention also currently features a call for abstracts which is open now until April 30. An abstract is required for all poster and oral presentations. Learn more here.
Early registration for the Convention is also open and can be accessed here.

End checks are a common problem when drying wood. Sometimes they aren’t too destructive and don’t travel too far, but other times they make the end of the lumber completely unusable or make a nice wide board into two not-so-wide boards. These cracks form on the ends of lumber because the ends are drying out faster and shrinking more than the middle. This happens because water can easily and quickly escape out the end, which is the same way it came in, but water trapped in the middle must travel out sideways to escape, which is a much trickier maneuver.

Washington State legislators changed building codes in new legislation, a move expected to increase in the use of mass timber products in commercial and residential construction. The Washington Forest Protection Association says the move will boost business for rural communities and forest landowners and will lead to an increase in the use of mass timber products in commercial and residential construction.

If California's gubernatorial candidates are to fulfill their ambitious goal of adding up to 3.5 million new housing units across the state over the next eight years, new efforts will need to be undertaken to streamline and reform the state's sagging construction industry. Could this effort create an opening for mass timber construction to take hold in the Golden State? It might, and here are a few reasons why.
