Sustainable Brands
As with most industries these days, companies in paper and packaging know that their customers — be they publishers, fast food companies or office suppliers — want to buy products that are deemed sustainable. They know that millions of dollars can depend on whether their products can meet this threshold. As a result, these companies look to buy wood that is certified by one of the third-party audited systems, such as the Forest Stewardship Council, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or the American Tree Farm System, which provide independent verification that lands producing wood and paper are managed sustainably.

Don’t miss your opportunity to receive discounted registration rates to attend the Advancements in Fiber-Polymer Composites Symposium, May 16-18 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Symposium will include plenary sessions and technical papers highlighting the newest practical applications and recent R&D developments in wood and fiber based composites, including nanocellulose composites.
The plenary speakers will address how composites are transforming the auto industry:
- Dr. Mohini Sain, Dean and Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Forestry, will discuss his pioneering work on Ontario Biocar Initiative.
- Dr. Alper Kiziltas, Research Scientist, Ford Motor Company will share how Ford is using cellulose-reinforced, compatibilized recycled polymer blends in its vehicles.
Technical papers will also be presented in these areas:
- Beyond Decking — Other Applications for Wood-Plastic Composites
- Novel Cellulose Nanocomposites
- Natural Fiber Reinforced Plastics and Polymer resins
- Recent Progress in WPC Materials and Processing
View the full Symposium program. In conjunction with the symposium, attendees can register for a one-day workshop on "Cellulose Nanocomposites: From Raw Materials to Applications." The workshop includes a tour of the Forest Product Lab's Cellulose Nanocrystal Pilot Facility.
Held every four years, the Symposium attracts hundreds of researchers, engineers, suppliers, producers and educators to collaborate on the latest advances and future opportunities for fiber-polymer composites. Register by Monday, April 10, for the best rates.

Moisture meters are essential tools for avoiding wood problems such as shrinking, warping and cupping. Both both pin and pinless meters have advantages and disadvantages. Pinless meters use electromagnetic wave technology, which measures the density in a 3-D field underneath the measuring pad and indicates the average. The distortion of the electromagnetic wave caused by the material being scanned is what the meter uses to measure moisture.

Jurisdictional certification brings together all stakeholders across all commodities within a district or state to ensure the entire region is deforestation-free. A few tropical forest regions have long used the jurisdictional approach; with proven success, more regions are now following suit. Pilot programs in Brazil and elsewhere exemplify the successes and challenges of the jurisdictional approach.

Many tropical forests around the world have been severely fragmented as human disturbance split once-contiguous forests into pieces. Previous research indicates trees on the edges of these fragments have higher mortality rates than trees growing in the interiors of forests. A new study dramatically adds to current estimates of carbon emissions from tropical deforestation.
