John Ackerly, president of Alliance for Green Heat, writes: "It's tempting to think that the best technological innovations gradually spread across the globe, as evidence of the improvement spreads.
In the case of residential wood and pellet heating, however, some innovation spreads, and some is spurned."

Nano-where? Nano-what? The 71st FPS International Convention in June will lay out a vision of a future bioeconomy and show how forests and forest products will play a major role. Come learn about some of the exciting forest products technologies in the pipeline that can transform our nation to a bioeconomy. This science is expected to be a critical driver of global economic growth and development in this century.
Dr. World Nieh of the USDA Forest Service will kick off the program which includes topics like:
- Cellulose Nanofiber for Advanced Functional Materials
- What are the Ranges and Basis of Auxeticity in the Phases of Cellulose Microfibrils?
- A Formula for Time Valuing CO2 Emissions from Buildings
See the full program here.
Nanotechnology could transform the forest products industry in virtually all aspects — ranging from production of raw materials, to new applications for composite and paper products, to new generations of functional nanoscale lignocellulosics. Learn more at IC '17, June 26-28 in Starkville, Mississippi!

As the planet warms, carbon markets are getting hot too. Forest landowners have been looking for ways to enter these markets, making money from their commercial timberland not just by selling logs — but also by demonstrating that their land is absorbing climate-warming carbon dioxide from the air. The more carbon an acre of trees holds, the more valuable it will be in these new carbon markets — whether in the California "cap and trade" market, international voluntary markets, or others that have been sprouting up across the U.S. and Canada.
But there's a vexing question: what forestry techniques do the best job of maximizing carbon storage in trees and soil — while still allowing landowners to provide habitat for wildlife and harvest timber for profitable sale? New results from a 15-year study in Vermont come to a surprising answer: Imitating old-growth forests enhances carbon storage in managed forestland far better than conventional forestry techniques.

Members of the timber industry were in the state capitol today, arguing for the passage of a bill that would support the state's struggling biomass industry. New Hampshire has six biomass plants. The plants convert wood waste products to energy, and they have trouble competing against the cheaper cost of natural gas. Senate lawmakers were already working on a bill to help the industry when they got the news last week that the state's smallest biomass plant, in Alexandria, was going to close.

They speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues, and they're petitioning officials at the top of their lungs. After reading Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" and learning about oil and gas drilling in Wayne National Forest, a Columbus, Ohio, classroom decided to advocate for Ohio's only national forest. As part of "Operation Dawn Chorus" — a mission named after the din of chirping birds at sunrise — the pre-kindergarten students at Little Dreamers, Big Believers day-care center in the Short North made dozens of drawings that show why they love the forest and sent them to the Bureau of Land Management, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and forestry officials.

The preparation of joints as well as the adhesive itself plays a critical role in the quality of fingerjointed products. Most failures of fingerjointed lumber are caused by poorly machined and poorly fitted dry joints. The adhesive is a factor in heat and water-resistance, however, even the best adhesive available cannot make up for a poor-fitting joint.

The Cleveland (Tennessee) State Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries program has now gone national. The college Wildlife Society recently partnered with a number of organizations to implement a student exchange, Student Wildlands Adventure Program that will allow CSCC's Wildlife Society students to go to New Mexico next month. Some of the organizations in the partnership include the U.S. Forest Service, Santa Fe National Forest National Park Service, Vallez Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico Department of Fame and Fish, New Mexico Wildlife Federation and the New Mexico Wildlife Society.
