Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt announced that in future regulatory actions biomass from managed forests will be treated as carbon neutral when used for energy production at stationary sources. The agency is also assessing options for incorporating non-forest biomass as carbon neutral into future actions. “This announcement grants America’s foresters much-needed certainty and clarity with respect to the carbon neutrality of forest biomass,” Pruitt said.

The future for forest products is highly dependent on global trade and new products from the emerging forest bioeconomy. The use of renewable raw materials is important in every industry, and it is imperative that forest products professionals be attentive to the opportunities. On June 13, the 72nd FPS International Convention in Madison, Wisconsin, will highlight these.
Brendan Jordan, Vice President Great Plains Institute will present on “The Emerging Forestry Bioeconomy: Fuels, Chemicals, Advanced Materials, and Carbon Management.” Additionally,
Matthew Rooney, Director, Economic Growth, George W. Bush Presidential Center, will speak on “NAFTA: The Stakes for Globalization and American Leadership.” The current debate regarding tariffs, protectionism and global competitiveness will significantly impact forest products industries and Rooney will provide insight.
These and other highly relevant topics (forest products education, housing, wood fundamentals, durability) will be explored at this year’s IC. You can see the full program here, and sign up by May 10, here for the best rates. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Contact Scott Springmier at Scott@forestprod.org.

The evidence is clear: Demand for forest products — including wood pellets, wood chips and other renewable wood resources used to generate energy — is associated with more, not less, productive forests.
A 2017 report by Forest2Market unequivocally illustrates that demand from the forest products industry has not resulted in dramatic losses to timberlands in the U.S. South, the most productive wood basket in the world.

While it’s hard to match the natural beauty of solid wood, it’s an undeniably pricey option. Fortunately, for many projects, the two main substitutes — medium-density fiberboard and plywood — are less expensive, yet perform just as well or better than solid wood for a wide range of projects, including furniture, cabinets, shelves and decorative accents such as wainscoting.
