The 12th International Conference on Wood Adhesives will be held Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, 2020 at the Portland Hilton Downtown hotel in Portland, Oregon. This is one year earlier than originally planned, based on the strong interest and activity in bio-based adhesives. The International Conference on Wood Adhesives is the premier technical conference on advances in adhesion of wood and biomass. Industry representatives were the majority of the 241 attendees in 2017, evenly split between the US and the rest of the world.
Call for Technical Symposia deadline is Aug. 5, 2019.

China has retaliated in the trade war - slapping $60 billion in tariffs on more than 5,000 U.S. goods.
China's Ministry of Finance announced Monday morning that China would increase tariffs on 5,140 U.S. products beginning June 1. The move is in retaliation to U.S. increases on Chinese goods that went into effect recently. Wood, tariffed from 5% to 25%, is on the list. The Hardwood Federation reports more specifically on these wood products.

Energy Institute of Alabama
The Alabama Department of Commerce released a new report showing that the forest industry is having a large impact on rural economies.
In 2018, Westervelt Company, Rex Lumber and Great Southern Wood all announced plans for production facilities in Alabama. All combined, more than 300 jobs were created at the facilities alone.
In 2018, 51 forest products companies created almost 2,000 new jobs across the state and invested $1.3 billion into new facilities and expansion of existing facilities.

A major update on how countries measure greenhouse gas emissions failed to address key weaknesses, particularly on bioenergy, campaigners have warned.
After a five-year process involving more than 280 scientists, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agreed technical advice on Sunday on everything from methane leaks in the oil and gas sector to emissions linked to flooding land.
Under the Paris Agreement, all countries, including the poorest, are expected to build up capacity to monitor their emissions, based on the latest guidelines.

At the USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory, researchers sometimes get a little destructive. They bend and break wood samples of all sizes, and even shoot lumber out of a cannon at 100 miles per hour.

Construction on the new education facility at the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Center reached a milestone May 8 in a gathering to celebrate the near-completion of timber installation on an innovative project covering 16,500 square feet. Targeted to open later this fall, the new Outdoor Education Center will serve as home to Clemson's Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) program. It is the first building manufactured from southern yellow pine cross-laminated timber east of the Mississippi River.

With the ongoing shortage of skilled labor showing little signs of abatement, contractors are eagerly seeking ways to increase efficiency. This is one reason why the use of panelized wood-framed wall systems and other methods of prefabrication are gaining popularity.
"There is a lot of automation and digitization of building information with BIM, so that's a factor," said Mike Steffen, director of innovation for Walsh Construction. "But the big factor that's leading to its use now is the shortage of labor."

An Australian government agency has awarded around $350,000 to two companies to investigate the production of bitumen and diesel from wood waste.
If successful, Australia's state of New South Wales could become home to the world's first biorefinery turning sawmill residues into renewable bitumen and diesel, according to ARENA — the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
