North American overseas pellet exports increased for the third consecutive quarter in the 4Q/15, rising 7 percent from the previous quarter. In the 4Q/15, total Canadian pellet overseas exports increased by 17 percent from the previous quarter with exports increasing to both Europe and Asia. On a regional basis, British Columbia exports continued to shift slightly towards Asia, with a slight reduction in exports to to Europe. In the 4Q/15, shipping from Eastern Canada, albeit still in small volumes, rose to its highest level in almost two years.

Scott Howell calls it "the hidden industry," but, he notes, forestry is the second-largest industry in the state of Georgia. Howell, a property services manager for Albany-based F&W Forestry Services, shared with the Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County recently some figures that demonstrate forestry's impact on the state’s economy. He said the industry has a $23.6 billion impact and provides more than 108,000 jobs. There are 151 wood-processing facilities in the state that use more than 45 million tons of wood annually.

Tens of thousands of U.S. businesses — including wood manufacturers and their suppliers — will be affected when new changes to the wage and hour rules take effect Dec. 1. The Department of Labor has amended the annual earnings threshold for employees to qualify for overtime pay — known as exempt status — from $23,660 to $47.476, a 101 percent jump. This would require employers either to increase pay, or change the status of any employee earning less $47,476 to "non-exempt status," which under the Fair Labor Standards Act means they would get overtime pay.

The Indonesian forestry ministry is on board with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's plan to ban new oil palm permits, and has rejected all outstanding requests to establish plantations in the forest zone, a ministry official said on Friday. Sixty-one palm oil companies have had their proposals rejected, sparing a total of 851,000 hectares of land from conversion, according to the San Afri Awang, the ministry's head of governance and planning.
