U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell recently announced over $8.3 million to substantially expand and accelerate wood products and wood energy markets. Federal funds will leverage almost $37 million in matching funds from 36 business, university, nonprofit and tribal partners in 19 states for a total investment of over $45 million. The public-private partnerships leveraged with these grants will lead to the removal of hazardous fuels from forests while spurring the economic development of rural communities.

Professor Richard Vlosky, Director of Louisiana Forest Products Development Center and Program Leader of Forest Products Program, will speak on Monday, June 26, at the 71st International Convention about the anticipated recovery of the forest industry's most painful economic recession in the last 50 years.
As the solid wood business continues in a trough and immediate relief in housing starts is not imminent, all segments of the forest industry have been stressed since the early 2009. In his study, they surveyed 3,000 logging companies in eight states in the U.S. South focusing on an economic assessment of their activity, status and perceptions of their future.
Come learn about survival, morale and the outlook for the logging industry in the South. See the full program here.

No one predicted the rapid growth of renewables — from 31 GW to 318 GW — within 13 years, said Justin Adams, managing director of The Nature Conservancy. Forestry employs 14 million people and adds $120 billion to global GDP. Now, businesses have an unprecedented opportunity to work forestry conservation into their business plans.

For the first time since 2013, the Oregon Department of Forestry and Associated Oregon Loggers hosted an operators dinner in John Day May 17, where attendees heard updates on the industry, legislation and insect problems. Associated Oregon Loggers Fores Policy Manager Rex Storm said although there have been changes since 2013, the forest economy remains "very slack," with only one local mill and lean timber supply. The problem is not a shortage in demand, he said, but a lack of a "sufficient and reliable volume of timber" preventing investment in mills, making it difficult to find buyers for private logs.

Over recent decades, conservation organizations have started listening to local communities for insight into how best to protect dwindling ecosystems. But only recently have some of them begun tuning in the voices of women, specifically. By adopting a "gendered approach" to conservation, some organizations believe they can improve both environmental and social outcomes.
