The biomass industry has experienced strong growth in recent years, sparking new and viable research into the latest advances. The research team from Waste to Wisdom, a U.S. Department of Energy-funded research project, will share its findings in a special session on biomass innovations at the Forest Products Society's 70th International Convention, June 27-29 in Portland, Oregon. Under the theme "New Horizons for the Forest Products Industry," the Forest Products Society is the leading global network for forest products professionals.

The Forest Products Society and Forest Products and Timber Construction Department — Salzburg University of Applied Sciences a will jointly host the fourth edition of the Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries Conference (PTF BPI), Oct. 25-26 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The conference is dedicated to the exchange of information and ideas about research on process technologies, quality control, and process improvement. Contemporary topics on real-time predictive modeling of processes, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, lean six-sigma and advanced data mining will be presented at the conference.

Kisatchie National Forest officials have announced an initiative to longleaf pines on private lands across Louisiana. The American Press reports that forestry officials want to boost the acreage of pines from 2.5 million to 8 million acres over the next few decades. The initiative involves several federal agencies.

Full-scale, wood-based nanocellulose production at a California site could result if a feasibility study underway by the USDA's Forest Products Laboratory pans out. The Madison, Wisconsin, research arm of the U.S. Forest Service is working with local government officials in Yreka, California, along with area timber processors, on a project that could help turn small-diameter trees into high-tech products.

An environmental advocate says the wood pellet industry is damaging ecosystems in the United States and wants emerging jurisdictions like the Northwest Territories to proceed cautiously. Sasha Stashwick, a senior advocate with the Natural Resource Defense Council in New York City, said the international demand for wood pellets is growing dramatically, and weak regulations allowed clear-cutting in the southeast United States.

Resolute Forest Products Inc filed a racketeering lawsuit against Greenpeace and some of its associates for its campaign criticizing the company's forestry practices. The Montreal, Quebec-based company said in a statement on Tuesday that the complaint, filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District Of Georgia, sought compensatory and other damages.

Don’t misunderstand—industrial-scale sawmills, for example, are absolutely astonishing, and I have had many hours of enjoyment touring and observing the production processes at such facilities. Even so, nothing piques my interest quite like the guy with a portable gas-powered sawmill cutting boards for a friend of a friend who is planning to build a camp this spring.
"These sorts of businesses are not necessarily high-production operations, and they do not occupy a significant portion of the industry, but none of that is necessary to fill an incredibly important niche in the market. The same concept holds true for virtually all aspects of the forest products industry, especially logging."
