The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that incentives will resume this summer for farmers, ranchers and forest landowners interested in growing and harvesting biomass for renewable energy. The support comes through the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP), which was reauthorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. BCAP provides financial assistance to establish and maintain new crops of energy biomass or who harvest and deliver forest or agricultural residues to a qualifying energy facility.

Checks totaling $20 million are being sent to 18 timber counties in western Oregon under terms of a federal subsidy renewed by Congress. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced that the money is being distributed to the so-called O&C counties under terms of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.

Connecticut isn't known a hub of the forestry industry, but the state's forests are contributing its economy at a rate of $3.3 billion annually, according to a new study released by the North East State Foresters Association. The gross annual output of the state's forest products industry is about $2.1 billion and the recreation economy that is related to wooded areas yields another $1.2 billion per year, according to the study.

The Environmental Protection Agency is set to release updated standards on how much ethanol must be blended into gasoline. Indiana has 14 ethanol plants that generate over $6.1 billion in economic output every year and supports around 25,000 jobs. That economic activity is supported by the Renewable Fuel Standards initiated in 2005 that mandates billions of gallons of ethanol be mixed into gasoline over several years.
