Hardwood manufacturers are looking at positive growth continuing in 2018, but they need to expect rising prices for both hardwood lumber and panel products. According to a report from Forecon Inc., "Lumber prices for our major (by value) species have all shown heavy demand, and most have seen a consistent upward trend in price throughout 2017 and certainly coming into 2018." Forecon Inc. is one of the oldest established professional forestry consulting firms operating in the hardwood regions of the Eastern United States.

Ron Kotrba writes: "The inability to see the world through other points of view is treacherous to relationships. Closemindedness, particularly when affixed to hardline positions and unbendable philosophies, cannot bridge ideological gaps. Sometimes, nothing can. The phenomenon of two individuals viewing the same situation and interpreting it very differently is as old as the human experience itself. Respect for other interpretations, even though disagreement exists, is critical to building solid relationships and is often beneficial in collaborations."

Industrial facilities are generally located far away from extensive forest regions. Because wood requires efforts to transport, it sees only limited use as a raw material in industry. In the EU-funded SteamBio project, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB have teamed up with various partners to change all that, developing a special steam drying technique that could significantly cut transportation costs.

There's a silver and blue lining to a massive pine beetle outbreak in the San Juan National Forest in Southwest Colorado. The round-headed and mountain pine beetles have wiped out more than 10,000 acres of ponderosa pine forests in the past few years in the Lake and Cow Canyons area east of the Dolores River. They are continuing their destructive path, encouraged by trees weakened from drought and by overcrowding in a forest in need of thinning.
The stands of dead and dying trees are not highly valued for conventional lumber because of their weakened structure. However, a secondary decorative and mining use for the trees has emerged because of a symbiotic relationship between the beetles and the fungus that comes with a beetle invasion. The beetles carry a fungus that feeds their young and infects the trees, creating distinctive coloration in the wood.

Big or small, gradual or sudden, change rhythmically punctuates human life. In the natural world, change is just as intrinsic and pattern-based. Seasonal fluctuations in temperature, shifts in sun light and natural disturbances, like fire, are all part of nature's cycle. Most people resist change, especially change they consider destructive. Perhaps that's why uncontrolled wildfires have been suppressed since the early 1900s. Fire can be damaging, and its effects certainly scar once verdant landscapes.
