Forest Products Society has partnered with WoodEMA and the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center & International Programs at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center to host the 9th International Scientific Conference on Economics and Management for the Forest and Forest Based Products Industries, which will be held Oct. 5-8 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A call for abstracts is currently open and will end Monday, June 20. Submit your abstract.
This conference will be a significant opportunity for industry professionals, academicians and policymakers to meet and exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues and friends from all over the world. Download the brochure for additional information.

The Forest Products Society and Forest Products and Timber Construction Department — Salzburg University of Applied Sciences a will jointly host the fourth edition of the Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries Conference (PTF BPI), Oct. 25-26 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The conference is dedicated to the exchange of information and ideas about research on process technologies, quality control, and process improvement. Contemporary topics on real-time predictive modeling of processes, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, lean six-sigma and advanced data mining will be presented at the conference.
FPS and Waste to Wisdom
The biomass industry has experienced strong growth in recent years, sparking new and viable research into the latest advances. The research team from Waste to Wisdom, a U.S. Department of Energy-funded research project, will share its findings in a special session on biomass innovations at the Forest Products Society's 70th International Convention, June 27-29 in Portland, Oregon. Under the theme "New Horizons for the Forest Products Industry," the Forest Products Society is the leading global network for forest products professionals.

FutureMetrics LLC released a white paper written by William Strauss, discussing the current state of the industrial wood pellet markets and potential opportunities for its growth in Japan. It was once predicted the industrial wood pellet industry would grow to an excess of 20 million metric tons per year by 2016. According to Strauss, "those forecasts did not anticipate the changes in the policy environment that underpins the use of wood pellets in place of coal in large power stations."

A consortium of academics, government officials and industry leaders wants to refocus the state on wood products and create a hub for bio-materials produced from Michigan's forests. The Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute was created in partnership between Houghton-based Michigan Technological University and Michigan State University in East Lansing. With the initiative, the members hope to create a statewide effort to establish manufacturing capabilities to produce, use and recycle wood products in innovative ways.

Forestry workers in Western Australia are still using the herbicide glyphosate despite the chemical's safety being under review by the national regulator. The World Health Organization's cancer research arm last year found glyphosate was probably carcinogenic. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority is now reviewing the safety of the chemical.

Klöckner Pentaplast has introduced Pentadecor films made of Resysta, a rice husk and polymer composite film. It is anticipated the material could be put to use on exterior surfaces. Resysta appeared in the U.S. market at the 2014 International Builders Show, where Westech Building Products launched TruGrain, a wood substitute based on Resysta. For that application the polymeric boards were extruded from a formula containing rice husks, mineral oil and salt.

A new piece of public artwork, created by architects Zeller & Moye and artist Katie Paterson and made up of over 10,000 tree species, has been unveiled on the grounds of Bristol University in England. The intricate structure, called Hollow, represents the planet's history and evolution through time. The structure is big enough to fit two people and is immersive. Light falls through apertures in the ceiling, mimicking the way sunlight falls through trees in a forest.
