According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. imported a total of 8.456 million cubic meters of softwood lumber from Canada in the first quarter of this year, which equates to a reduction of 16 percent over last year. While January's import volume was slightly higher year-over-year at 1.6 percent, February and March saw reductions of 30 percent and 15 percent respectively. The value of Canadian softwood lumber rose by 15 percent to $1.418 billion, and the value per unit rose to 36 percent to $167.7 per cubic meter.

Registration is open for the 20th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium, which will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, Sept. 12-15.
This symposium will be hosted by the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) and is co-sponsored by the Forest Products Society (FPS) and the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO). This symposium is a forum for those involved in nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood, wood-based products and structures.

Biomass Magazine
A committee working on development of a voluntary national wood chip heating fuel technical quality standard for the U.S. has a draft ready for public comment. The effort, funded by a U.S. Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center Grant, has been underway for several years. Partners working directly on the initiative include the Biomass Energy Resource Center, Innovative Natural Resource Solutions, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and the Biomass Thermal Energy Council.

In Thunder Bay, Unifor members will be rallying today to encourage the federal government to reach a softwood lumber deal with the U.S. The union says forestry provides more than 200,000 jobs in Canada, in more than 650 communities. But it worries some of those jobs are in jeopardy because the U.S. government imposed a new tariff on Canadian softwood exports last month.

The 2009 Highway 31 wildfire in Horry County, South Carolina, marked as the most destructive in the state's history, scorched 20,000 acres of land and destroyed 100 homes in the county. While some people disagree with the state's practice of controlled burns, state officials defend the burns as a prevention for catastrophes like the Highway 31 wildfire. South Carolina Forestry Commission representative Brad Bramlett said controlled or prescribed burns destroy future hazards and fuels for uncontrolled wildfires.

A fire in Alaska grew to more than 2 square miles (5.18 sq. kilometers) over the weekend. Firefighters were able to get the western and southern edges of the fire under control, preventing it from crossing the 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) to the nearest residential area of Sterling. Alaska Division of Forestry Public Information Officer Celeste Prescott said firefighters are focusing on those two perimeters while coordinating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to manage the fire for ecological benefits to the forest.

The Klamath Region of the western United States, which spans northern California and southwestern Oregon, is considered a richly biodiverse botanical hotspot boasting nearly 30 species of conifer. The shrublands of northern California could end up replacing forests composed of a mixture of broadleaf trees, evergreen hardwoods and conifers across large swaths of the Klamath, a study by scientists with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) and Harvard Forest suggests.
