Mass timber construction is growing in markets where wood hasn't been used for years — mid- to high-rise buildings. Under the theme "New Horizons for the Forest Products Industry," the Forest Products Society (FPS), the global network for forest products professionals, will host the 70th International Convention Monday through Wednesday, June 27-29, in Portland, Oregon, highlighting a focused discussion among the global forest products community being conducted to develop cross-laminated timber and other products to support this emerging demand.

The Forest Products Society and Forest Products and Timber Construction Department — Salzburg University of Applied Sciences a will jointly host the fourth edition of the Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries Conference (PTF BPI), Oct. 25-26 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The conference is dedicated to the exchange of information and ideas about research on process technologies, quality control, and process improvement. Contemporary topics on real-time predictive modeling of processes, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, lean six-sigma and advanced data mining will be presented at the conference.

After a series of negotiations between the U.S. and Canada on a new softwood-lumber trade agreement, the countries' top trade officials say "significant differences remain" between the two sides but indicate further talks are planned. U.S. Trade Rep. Michael Froman and Canadian Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland said in a June 17 joint statement that there had been "100 days of intensive engagement" and "significant advances in exploring the key issues and priorities." But there is no deal yet.

Jobs within the West Virginia Division of Forestry are safe for now. The division requested the approval to lay off 37 employees. In order to approve the cuts, the state Personnel Board must give their approval. Last Thursday, the board decided not to make a decision on those layoffs just yet.

REN21 recently published its annual overview on the state of renewable energy, reporting 2015 was a record year for renewable energy installations. Renewable power and renewable heat both increased, along with renewables used in transportation. According to the report, titled the "Renewables 2016 Global Status Report," 173 countries had renewable energy targets in place as of early 2016. In addition, 146 countries had support policies in place. The report also stresses that renewables have been shown to be cost-competitive with fossil fuels in many markets.

U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer and Tom Martin, President of the American Forest Foundation, will be among the elected officials and other leaders celebrating the 75th Anniversary of America's first tree farm in Montesano, on Saturday. The nation's first tree farm, founded in the Washington town in 1941, ushered in an era of certified sustainable forestry and family forestry. The Clemons Tree Farm was the first ever certified tree farm, and the U.S now has 80,000 family-owned tree farms, 900 of which are in Washington. Like the Clemons farm, all are certified by the American Tree Farm System (ATFS).

Thirteen forestry and natural resource students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello recently spent two weeks traveling the state and region to learn more about efforts to restore endangered species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, the Indiana bat and the speckled pocketbook mussel. The Contemporary Natural Resource Issues class began with a trip to the Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research in Anguilla, Mississippi, then followed with a study of tree establishment efforts and landowner incentives in Dermott.

PHI Group, a U.S. public company focused on conventional energy and renewables, recently announced that the company has signed a letter of intent to acquire a wood pellet manufacturing company in Southeastern United States. The identity of the target company and certain details will be kept confidential until closing. The total purchase price for 100 percent of the operation, excluding liabilities and cash and cash equivalents, is approximately $9 million dollars. The transaction is subject to entering into a definitive purchase and sale agreement, customary conditions, due diligence and financing commitments.

An Cuong Wood Working, one of Vietnam's largest wood furniture and decorative panel manufacturing firms, says it will see $30 million in investment through a German finance group via a fund traded on the London Stock Exchange, the VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund. The An Cuong Wood-Working Joint Stock Company, its formal name, opened in 1994. It is both a manufacturer and distributor for various well-known brands from U.S., Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia in wood and plastic based panels used in commercial and residential interiors.
