A new university study finds the natural resources sector in the Northwest fuels more than $176 billion in direct and related sales and accounts for nearly 886,000 full and part-time jobs. The study, commissioned by Northwest Farm Credit Services and performed by extension economists at Oregon State University and the University of Idaho, found agriculture, forestry and fisheries account for 10.6 percent of all jobs in the five-state region and 12.2 percent of all sales in 2015.

The Forest Products Society and Forest Products and Timber Construction Department — Salzburg University of Applied Sciences a will jointly host the fourth edition of the Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries Conference (PTF BPI), Oct. 25-26 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The conference is dedicated to the exchange of information and ideas about research on process technologies, quality control, and process improvement. Contemporary topics on real-time predictive modeling of processes, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, lean six-sigma and advanced data mining will be presented at the conference.

U.K. wood pellet producers supplying the U.K. premium pellet market will benefit in the short term from the U.K.'s vote to leave the E.U., U.K. Pellet Council chair John Westmacott said. Producers within the U.K. could benefit from a weaker pound against the dollar and euro, which would make the cost of imports more expensive. But U.K. premium pellet prices are unlikely to be affected in the short term, Westmacott said. Meanwhile, a large European supplier to the U.K. premium market posited that a weaker sterling against the euro and less competition from cheap European imports could give U.K. producers scope to raise prices to consumers.

Weyerhaeuser plans to permanently close its lumber mill and plywood mill in Columbia Falls, Montana, by the end of the summer. It will also close its Columbia Falls, Montana, main office. Weyerhaeuser will continue to operate its three other mills in Montana — a lumber mill in Kalispell, a plywood mill in Kalispell and a medium-density fiberboard mill in Columbia Falls.

Deep in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Clemson University forestry students are hard at work. As they trek up Whiteside Mountain, they collect an array of plant and tree species while identifying topographical traits of the area. The students were participating in one of the many aspects of the Clemson Forestry Summer Camp, a seven-week program designed to give students hands-on experience in the field of forestry.

The Louisiana Forestry Foundation awarded 45 scholarships to college students for the 2016-2017 academic year totaling $54,500. The scholarships were awarded to students who are majoring in forestry at Louisiana Tech University, Louisiana State University and the Oakdale Technical College. They will receive funds from the endowed named scholarships that provide income without using the principal of the fund that created the scholarship.

James "Jim" Schroering is the Virginia Department of Forestry's new Longleaf Pine and Southern Pine Beetle Prevention coordinator. The longleaf pine ecosystem is highly diverse and valuable, and it has all but been eliminated from its native range in southeastern Virginia, where it once occupied more than 1 million acres. Today, only about 200 native longleaf pines remain in Virginia — the northern most range of the longleaf pine, which extends from southeastern Virginia to Texas.
