The discovery began with a rumor about a fishing "honey hole" somewhere off the Alabama coast where the red snapper was plentiful. By the time Ben Raines — an environmental reporter for the Mobile Press Register — heard about the location, the rumor had evolved. Apparently, a local dive shop owner told him, the fish were congregating around an underwater forest peeking out of the sediment 60 feet below the surface.

Lumber duties of 7 percent being imposed on softwood imports from Canada were condemned by the National Association of Home Builders. Granger MacDonald, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders, said it would "jeopardize affordable housing" and branded the U.S. Commerce Department's preliminary decision to impose up to 7.7 percent anti-dumping duties on Canadian lumber imports a tax.

There is some good news for the Haines State Forest. The local forestry office has been in jeopardy ever since the legislature zeroed out its funding two years ago. But in the most recent state operating budget, one-time funding for the local forestry post made it through. This was the budget that almost didn't pass. But the Alaska Legislature finally came to an agreement and averted a government shutdown just eight days before the deadline. Now that the dust has settled, Forestry Director Chris Maisch says a $102,000 allocation for Haines survived budget negotiations.

Fire danger increased to high over the holiday weekend. The Oregon Department of Forestry said that's due to hot temperatures, dry vegetation and the wind gusts the region has scene over the last few days. Now the cut off for power tools or anything that emits a spark is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. ODF staff said these precautions are necessary, especially with calls doubling for the department in the last week.
