This summer, United Airlines is flying high with a new type of fuel. They are going to be using fuel that is made from farm animal manure and fats. The effort is an attempt to curb the greenhouse gas emissions produced by burning jet fuel in commercial aircraft.
Conventional fossil fuels, which airlines have utilized for many years, have been proven to be bad for the environment because they release large amounts of new carbon into the atmosphere.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Jeff Merkley wrote a letter, signed by dozens of fellow senators, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Agriculture, urging them to recognize the obvious benefits of including forest bioenergy, or biomass, in federal policy.
"Many states are relying on renewable biomass to meet their energy goals, and we support renewable biomass to create jobs and economic growth while meeting our nation’s energy needs,” the duo said in the letter. “Our constituents employed in the biomass supply chain deserve a federal policy that recognizes the clear benefits of forest bioenergy.”

Tasmanian specialty timber workers may have federal government backing in their bid to have their craft recognized by UNESCO.
The specialty timber sector wants access to about 9,000 hectares of World Heritage-listed forest.
It believes Tasmania's cultural history in timber crafting should be recognized by the United Nations in a similar way to the state's Indigenous heritage.
Richard Colbeck, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Minister for Agriculture, said he may back the bid.

Nine private timber companies have closed access to their land in the Columbia Gorge due to extreme fire danger.
The Columbian newspaper reports the land totals 300,000 acres in Skamania and Klickitat counties in Washington and Hood River and Wasco counties in Oregon. The companies say they will keep the land closed until significant moisture reduces fire hazards.

Economic growth and homebuilding will also increase demand for North American structural panels, which are forecast to grow 19 percent. APA represents approximately 159 plywood, oriented strand board, glulam timber, wood I-joist, Rim Board and structural composite lumber mills throughout the U.S. and Canada.
