A total of 205 delegates from more than 15 countries attended the Forest Products Society (FPS) 70th International Convention, June 27-29 in Portland, Oregon. Participants from academia, consulting, industry and over 40 students networked and learned about latest in forest products in the heart of the Pacific Northwest forest industry.
"The Convention provided a great chance to get a glimpse of the future of wood science and marketing by interacting with top researchers and educators in our field," said Maureen Puettmann, Ph.D., Convention Chair and FPS President.

The Forest Products Society and Forest Products and Timber Construction Department — Salzburg University of Applied Sciences a will jointly host the fourth edition of the Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries Conference (PTF BPI), Oct. 25-26 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The conference is dedicated to the exchange of information and ideas about research on process technologies, quality control, and process improvement. Contemporary topics on real-time predictive modeling of processes, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, lean six-sigma and advanced data mining will be presented at the conference.

Two levels of government and Emera are investing $1.67 million in a type of business incubator for the forestry industry in Nova Scotia. The forestry "innovation hub" will help startups make a business out of using wood byproducts in new ways, the provincial government says.

The coastal forest industry surrounding Vancouver is facing economic and environmental constraints, while the municipalities most affected by the industry are unsure how to balance the two. The Truck Loggers Association (TLA) conducted two surveys of community leaders' views of changes to coastal forestry between 2004 to 2015. The survey gauged support by community representatives, including mayors, for both the coastal forest industry as well as public parks and protected land.

Plans for a wood pellet manufacturing plant in northern Vermont are benefiting from a state community development grant. Gov. Peter Shumlin announced this week that $550,000 has been awarded to the town of Lunenberg, which will lend the money to Kingdom Pellets.

On June 23, in an unprecedented and historic move, the U.K. voted to leave the European Union by a vote of 52 to 48 percent. Prime Minister David Cameron resigned shortly after the results were tallied and markets faltered at the initial shock. While it is too early to know the full implications of this action, we do have some understanding of how the U.K. will begin to unwind its relationship with the EU and what this might mean for export/import industries like ours.

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been sighted and confirmed in two additional states — Texas and Nebraska — bringing the number of infiltrated states to 26. The beetle was also found outside of quarantine zones in Ontario last week. EAB threatens all North American ash trees — a population of about 8.7 billion. It's already killed an estimated 50 million trees.
