Both the U.S. and Canada produce lumber products and have had disagreements over lumber since the 1800s. Both have traded wood products in both directions with and without tariffs. Previous administrations have implemented duties and tariffs; NAFTA plays a role, too, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled "no damages" to the U.S. in previous legal challenges.

Policymakers have focused on lowering emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide from automobiles and the transportation sector during the past decade to address global warming. But, surprisingly, the building sector is responsible for nearly half of all U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. Wood is a proven means of putting the brakes on this trend.

Alaska's Southeast Island School District operates four bioenergy-heated greenhouses in Thorne Bay, Kasaan, Naukati Bay and Coffman Cove. Each greenhouse provides fresh produce to the school cafeteria and surrounding communities, jobs for district students, and an opportunity for teachers to bring textbooks to life.
Success stories like this form the basis of the "Biomass-Heated Greenhouse Handbook," recently published online by the U.S. Forest Service State and Private Forestry Wood Innovations program in partnership with the State of Alaska, Alaska Energy Authority. By showcasing best practices and lessons learned, the handbook serves as a template for others to replicate success.
