Bioenergy Insight
Bioenergy can play a role in reducing the risk of forest fires, according to a video recently published on the European Forest Institute's website. Across the world, forest fires devastate large areas of forest every year. In 2017, the tragic trend has been seen in forest fires in France, the U.S. and Portugal. In its new video, the EFI looks at the factors behind increased forest fire risks in the Mediterranean, and advocates a new vision "based on shifting the focus from reactive fire suppression to long term proactive fire prevention and forest management at the landscape scale."

Tests at a federal laboratory suggest that cross-laminated timber (CLT) components used in a multi-story apartment building would perform well in the event of a fire. A post at the Woodworking Network described a variety of tests conducted at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Fire Research Laboratory for a committee of the International Code Council. Results appear to show that buildings constructed of CLT components would resist the spread of fire.

On the surface, biofuels seem more expensive than fossil fuels. A litre of ethanol costs more than a litre of gasoline. A ton of wood pellets costs more than a ton of coal. But is this a fair comparison? What would fossil fuels cost if producers had to pay for the environmental damage they caused? How much would coal and gasoline producers have to raise their prices if they had to account for the cost of reversing global warming and acid rain?

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker's administration plans to designate a fuel derived from felling trees and clearing brush in forests as a form of renewable energy, a move that environmental advocates say would increase emissions and counter promises the governor made after President Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris climate accord. The proposed rules, which stem from a provision in a 2014 law supported by the logging industry, would provide financial incentives for the energy source known as woody biomass — wood chips and pellets made from tree trunks, branches, sawdust and other plant matter.
