Climate Central
European officials are moving to close a loophole that promotes the burning of wood for electricity by an industry that's felling American trees, and a new report they commissioned has laid bare the urgent need for reform. European Union climate rules treat woody biomass energy as if it's as clean as solar or wind energy, despite it releasing more heat-trapping carbon dioxide for every megawatt of electricity produced than coal. Producing wood pellets for fuel can also foster climate-changing deforestation.

- Bonding untraditional substrates
- New wood-based bonded products
- Bio-based and novel raw materials and adhesive systems, resin chemistry
- Issues with commercial implementation of new adhesives
- Impact of regulations and consumer preference
- Fundamental understanding of wood bonding and adhesive-substrate interactions
- Composites
- Modeling
- Engineered wood
- Analytical and testing methodology

In 2014, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority launched the $27 million Renewable Heat New York (RHNY) program, which built upon NYSERDA's biomass R&D program and leveraged NYSERDA's decades of experience administering energy efficiency and renewable energy deployment programs.
The goal of RHNY is to create a self-sustaining wood heat industry that can deliver high efficiency and clean biomass heating options for New Yorkers. It takes a multifaceted approach to support the wood heat industry through a combination of incentives, training, technical assistance and R&D. RHNY is the most comprehensive wood heat program in the northeast, and the only one that provides incentives for both residential and commercial advanced cordwood and pellet boilers, as well as pellet stoves.

Britain is losing its productive forest resource because harvested trees are not being replaced, according to a new Forestry Commission report. "Estimates of Change in Canopy Cover in British Woodlands" shows that for every 100 hectares of coniferous woodland harvested in 2006, only just over half has been restocked with productive conifer species.

The WMIA's Educational Foundation awards scholarships to those who want to study and pursue a career in wood technology, machinery and related fields. To date, the foundation has provided nearly $350,000 to assist students with furthering their goals. This year, the foundation's Board of Trustees selected 12 college students to receive a total of $18,500 in scholarships. This was a difficult decision, as a record number of applications were received, and a record number of female students, 14, applied for scholarships this year, with nine receiving awards.
