On Aug. 8, China's Commerce Ministry released a preliminary list of proposed tariffs on $16 billion in U.S. goods, which came just a day after the U.S. Trade Representative's office released a finalized list of $16 billion in Chinese goods that will be hit with tariffs. The tariffs are scheduled to be activated on Aug. 23, the Chinese ministry clarified, which is the same day that the U.S. plans to begin collecting an additional 25 percent in tariffs on $16 billion in Chinese goods.

Canada's forestry industry is pushing back against comments by U.S. President Trump that lumber imports are partially to blame for intense forest fires in California. Trump said a at cabinet meeting Thursday that the U.S. should harvest fallen trees from the forest floor, which he says are making fires worse, rather than import wood when "Canada is charging us a lot of money to bring their timber down into our country." The comments were troubling and a bit ridiculous, said Forest Products Association of Canada CEO Derek Nighbor.

"Super-termites" form massive colonies — numbering up to two million — and can cause extreme damage within time frames as short as six months. Traditional dry-wood termites typically take at least 10 years to do similar damage.

Irving Limited's (JDI) research lab in Sussex, New Brunswick — is one of only three places in the world that applies genetic science to grow softwood trees to sustain healthy forests and related forest products jobs. That means growing taller, straighter and more disease-resistant trees faster than they’re being harvested. The original seed sources are from local parent trees selected from forests across the region. The Sussex tree lab is the only one run by JDI and is one of only two operating in North America, while the third is located in Europe.
