International forestry experts now warn policy makers all over the world should make sure to check into the protection policies for boreal forests. In fact, they made this note in an article that was published on Thursday in the journal Science, an article that was part of a special journal issue on global forests which was released just prior to the World Forestry Congress, coming in September.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission has sent 13 employees to help fight wildfires in four states. The commission announced Monday it is sending eight people to Texas, three to Idaho and one each to California and Washington state. Their varying roles include wildland firefighter, heavy equipment boss and public spokesman.

It's not just a buoyant day for equities (China excluded) on Tuesday. Yes, lumber prices are on the up, too. News of a rise in new home sales in the U.S. last month has helped push lumber prices up 2.5 percent to $246.10 per 1,000 board feet, writes Mamta Badkar.
And the advance in lumber, which is used in the building of frames for homes and is down about 26 percent this year, should pick up speed, according to a forecast from Capital Economics. Its analysts reckon lumber is set "for a strong recovery" which will leave prices at $360 per $1,000 board feet by the end of the year. That's up 45 percent from current levels.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has announced more than $3.8 million in funding to support grants focused on using nanotechnology to find solutions to societal challenges such as food security, nutrition, food safety and environmental protection. The awards were made through NIFA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, which is authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill.

Northwest Oregon continues to see high fire danger and has put several restrictions in place to ban campfires, limit OHV riders to forest roads, and require forest visitors to have a shovel and 1 gallon of water or a 2.5-pound extinguisher. The Oregon Department of Forestry continues to get reports of the use of exploding targets in the forest. The public is reminded that exploding targets, tracer rounds and sky lanterns are all prohibited under current regulations.
