Some members with the Virginia Department of Forestry left Monday to help with the recovery efforts in Texas from Harvey. Officials say the incident management team is heading to the Houston area to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) storm response efforts in the region. he VDOF employees from across the state left from Abingdon, and are expected to be in Texas for two weeks.

Chris Whelan, business development manager at Loctite Engineered Wood Adhesives Company (division of Henkel), is a featured speaker at the International Conference on Wood Adhesives Oct. 25-27 in Atlanta.
Whelan's talk, "Innovation in Wood Through Advanced Adhesives," will focus on innovative wood products and construction made possible through advanced adhesive solutions. He'll explain how Henkel/Loctite works with industry to find creative solutions to production, products and design, and review the history of adhesives and why they offer an important future for the wood industry, as well as discuss new advancements in adhesive formulations.
Held once every four years, the International Conference on Wood Adhesives is the premier technical conference on advances in adhesion of wood and biomass. Since 1980, the conference has attracted an international audience including businesses that make and use adhesives, their suppliers, researchers and students.

It's not too late to register for the 20th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium,
which will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, Sept. 12-15. This symposium will be hosted by the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) and is cosponsored by the Forest Products Society (FPS) and the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO). This symposium is a forum for those involved in nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood, wood-based products, and structures. Registration is open until Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Over 170 attendees from a dozen countries attended the Forest
Products Society's International Convention June 26-28 in Starkville, Mississippi. The 71st annual event was hosted by Mississippi State University's Department of Sustainable
Bioproducts, and the event focused on industry advancements and the latest research in support of economically and environmentally sustainable use of wood and renewable cellulosic materials.

A Canadian-based forestry company has put politics aside to help U.S. residents in flooded Houston neighborhoods. Resolute Forest Products has pledged to send a rail car of lumber to help Houston rebuild following record-level flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.
Seth Kursman, vice president of Corporate Communications, Sustainability and Government Affairs with Resolute Forest Products, told news sources he was moved to act after watching footage of the devastation. Kursman lived in Houston prior to moving to Canada 15 years ago. Kursman said he contacted CEO Richard Garneau with the idea of donating a truckload. Garneau not only upped the amount to a rail car but also on Resolute's twitter page, the company calls on others to join the effort.

The Great Recession of 2007-2008 marked two consecutive years of loss in many forest products supply chain sectors, from timberland owners to sawmills and wood product manufacturers. Housing starts, the dominant demand sector for wood products, have never fully recovered. Single-family housing starts fell nearly two-thirds from their peak of 2.3 million in January 2006 to 872,000 starts in 2008, the lowest annual pace since January 1991.
