Wildfires are personal. They threaten your home, your favorite campsite, maybe even your entire city. So it's easy not to look up during the onslaught of fire and smoke to see that you are not alone in confronting what one western Montana firefighter recently called "the beast." But 2017's ferocious wildfire season is, in fact, a global phenomenon playing out from the American West to Portugal, Spain, France and Greece.

Practical Failure Analysis Techniques for Wood Based Products
Tuesday, Oct. 24
12:30-3 p.m.
REGISTER HERE
Easy to perform methods and some forensic thinking are often superior to complicated scientific methods of failure analysis. The distribution of features, the shape of cracks or indicators for the moisture content in the past are often key elements in nailing down the root cause for defective windows, floors, facades or furniture. The workshop shows several simple but powerful techniques that can be used by every expert for failure analysis. It also offers some theory, lots of examples and practical demonstrations, as well as time for discussions, questions and case presentations by participants. The techniques presented in the workshop will speed up and improve your future failure analysis.
Fundamentals of Moisture-Induced Swelling in Wood and Impact on Bond Performance
Tuesday, Oct. 24
3:30-5 p.m.

The swelling and shrinking of wood with moisture drives many wood degradation mechanism and places enormous stress on wood adhesive bonds. This workshop reviews the fundamental phenomena that drive wood swelling, and how this understanding can be used to diminish swelling or mitigate its impacts in wood-adhesive bondlines. To maximize the practical utility of the information, time for questions will be included.
Only $160 per person. One price includes both workshops! You can attend either, or both.

Missoulian
Many residents of Missoula, Montana, will never forget recently watching the Lolo Peak fire race along its namesake mountain. From a computer's perspective, the outbreaks on Aug. 17 and 18 look no less impressive, if somewhat detached from the drama of after-dark evacuations and homes burning to the foundations. And thanks to the expanded real-time capabilities of modern mapping, fire behavior specialists have magnified their ability to turn yesterday's progression into tomorrow's prediction.
