The 14th World Forestry Congress concluded on Sept. 11 with a declaration setting out a vision for 2050 that sees forests playing "a decisive role" in ending hunger, improving livelihoods and combating climate change, said the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Congress "underlined that forests are critical to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a message to the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, which will meet later this month in New York to adopt the 2030 development agenda," FAO said in a news release.

Lumber is a relatively difficult market to follow. The easy part is new home and multifamily construction — because statistics are collected — but lumber is used in many other ways that are not monitored as closely. Supply statistics come out late. Lumber prices have trended lower the past 12 months, only interrupted once with a $50 countertrend rally. Prices have made lower lows, but the momentum study in the lower part of the chart is making a higher low and the rate of price decline is slowing. The decline is slowing because someone is buying! A coalition of European and international organisations is calling on the EU to exclude bioenergy from its next Renewable Energy Directive and, thereby, to stop direct and indirect subsidies for renewable energy from going to biofuels and wood burning.
