If you listened closely to the woods north of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, this summer, you could hear modern-day lumberjacks trimming white pines; if you captured a glimpse through the thick growth, you might be surprised to learn they were all teenagers. Armed with pole saws and tree pruners on this early August day, eight teens focused their attention on young white pines, which hold the promise to become future giants. Full-grown white pines with their unique uneven branches are the north wood's tallest tree.

Northern California's redwoods tower majestically above the forest floor, protected and cherished by all. All, that is, except tree poachers, who lurk in the shadows waiting to hack into some of the world's oldest organisms and extract valuable chunks of knotted burl. Theirs is an unlikely prize: A heavy, knotted chunk of rust-red wood, nestled near the base of older trees and reminiscent of a large hornet's nest. In the right hands, these chunks of ancient wood can prove infinitely valuable.

Johan Bruck, IKEA's Deputy Material and Innovation Leader in Polymers, will present IKEA's perspective and strategic direction for the wood adhesives used in their products — both as brand owner, as well as furniture producer. He will explain IKEA's focus to move towards a fossil-free adhesive base while retaining the same expectations of form, function and cost as present solutions — BUT with an advantage of sustainable and healthy products. IKEA plans to build the change in a stepwise approach with the expectation to achieve their objectives by 2030.

A hillside overlooking the Stillaguamish Valley in Washington sprouts with young Douglas firs and western red cedar, eight years after being logged. Much of the forest on Stimson Hill was cut down in 2009 following a state Department of Natural Resources timber auction. The next year, crews replanted the area. The trees growing there now, state officials say, show how it's possible to raise money from logging, while safeguarding habitat and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Federal officials say the beginning of a sizable thinning operation in part of the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona means residents and visitors should be on the lookout for heavy, mechanized equipment, including numerous trucks hauling logs from the area. Tree removal began recently on the 1.6 square mile (4.1 square kilometer) area about 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) north of Parks, which is about halfway between Flagstaff and Williams along Interstate 10.

Bob Cleaves, president of the Biomass Power Association, writes: "Typically, the Biomass Power Association is focused on federal government activities that have the potential to affect the biomass industry. Congress and federal agencies like the U.S. EPA, USDA, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. DOE can develop policies that have an enormous impact on biomass facilities across the country. Tax, carbon and electricity market regulation are just a few of the issues that we engage on in Washington. Even though the Clean Power Plan's future is very much in doubt, it required every state to design its own carbon reduction plan to meet specific targets."
