The U.S. Commerce Department is spending $3 million to explore expanding the market for wood products in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and New York. The grant will bring together the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, Northern Forest Center and the Northern Border Regional Commission to assess the supply and demand for wood products, create a strategy for expanding markets and pay for projects that support the industry's growth. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says the project will boost jobs and expand a critical industry across the Northeast.

A new mass timber building in Iowa has arrived, and it's the state's first. The entire structure is made of gorgeous fast-growing wood pieces laminated and fitted together with wooden dowels that don't need glue to stay in place. It's not from IKEA, but it does come with assembly instructions.

A pile of seemingly neglected sawdust sitting outside a north central Idaho sawmill gave birth to Ben Anderberg's latest big idea. Stored outside, the sawdust didn't appear to have much value to the mill. That made Anderberg think it could be an inexpensive raw material for another product. Four years later, he believes he's still right. He is a founder of Northwest Biomass, a company that began making wood pellets six months ago. Anderberg's eight-employee operation is taking Potlatch, Idaho back to its roots in a small, but important, way. It is the first time any manufacturing has been done in the former company town since the Potlatch sawmill closed in 1981, said Mayor David Brown.

National forests and grasslands — and indeed all of America's public lands — draw visitors from all over the world. There is no other land management system quite like it. National forests are well known for their ecological, recreational, and cultural values. This is why they are sometimes called "America's backyard." The name is well-earned. National forests and grasslands are incredible natural resources and national treasures. But what if a national forest actually is your backyard, or something close to it?

The ubiquitous wood pallet is often seen hoisted by a forklift and piled high with new, shrink-wrapped goods headed to market. Pallets have become such a common sight in the world of logistics that the public doesn't view them with suspicion, or consider them particularly controversial.
But that changes when the discussion turns to what happens to wood pallets at the end of their useful lives, which can be more than a decade. It’s not a trivial subject. According to the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association, there are 1.8 billion pallets — 93 percent made of wood — in use in the U.S. every day, and 3.3 billion a day throughout Europe. Turning them into a fuel source when past the point of recycling not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also keeps millions of tons of solid waste out of landfills each year.

Engineering News-Record
While widely accepted in Europe, designers and builders in the U.S. have struggled to take full advantage of mass timber because of current limitations in prescriptive codes. This fall, government members of the International Code Council will vote to update the International Building Code to include a new Type IV construction category for mass timber.
It will, if passed, ensure building officials have the tools they need to keep the IBC relevant to the changing marketplace. The proposed codes are intended to assure the public and fire services that code-compliant tall wood buildings will be safe and strong, with rigorous and redundant systems of fire protection. As they stand, the codes define building types, establish fire-resistance ratings and outline important requirements that ensure consistency.
