Tropical forests emit more carbon each year than all of the cars and trucks in the United States, scientists said on Thursday, calling for greater efforts to stem forest loss and damage. Almost 70 percent of tropical forest emissions are caused by degradation, a study in the journal Science said, measuring the less visible form of damage for the first time along with deforestation which has long been recognized as problematic.

U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities
Enviva Holdings, LP has announced a $45,000 grant to support African-American land retention and healthy forests in northeastern North Carolina. The grant to the Sustainable Forestry Program of the Roanoke Center — a nonprofit affiliate of the Roanoke Electric Cooperative headquartered in Ahoskie, North Carolina — deepens the existing partnership between Enviva, the Roanoke Center and the U. S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. That program serves forest owners in seven counties in the Cooperative's service region and near two of Enviva's wood pellet facilities.

Newfoundland and Labrador is expected to see several wood pellet production operations starting up over the next year. The products produced will roll out into what has become an exploding market space - currently straining with a lack of supply. The Pellet Fuels Institute, a nonprofit association for the North American pellet industry, lists 10 producers for certified pellet fuel in Canada. Of those, only two are located in the Atlantic provinces: Marwood Ltd. of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Shaw Resources of Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia.
