An invitation to present has been extended for the 20th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium. This Symposium will be held Sept. 12-15, 2017 in Madison, Wisconsin. This is a forum for those involved in nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood, wood-based products and structures.
The event brings together the international nondestructive testing and evaluation research community, users of various nondestructive testing technologies, equipment development and manufacturing professionals, representatives from various government agencies and other groups to share research findings and new nondestructive testing products and technologies.
The Symposium will include oral and poster presentations from scientists and engineers, as well as exhibits from equipment development and manufacturing firms. The Symposium organizing committee invites papers, posters, and equipment demonstrations (exhibits) from interested individuals and organizations.
Subject areas include:
- Nondestructive characterization of wood and wood-based materials
- Evaluation of forest materials for optimal utilization
- Advanced grading technologies for solid wood and engineered wood products
- Condition assessment, evaluation and repair of existing wood structures
- Condition assessment of historic wood artifacts and structures
- Evaluation and assessment of urban trees
- Industrial application of emerging nondestructive testing technologies
- Other nondestructive evaluation related research and development activities
The submission deadline is Feb. 7, 2017. For more information about the call for papers, please contact Pamela Byrd.
The 20th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium is hosted by the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) and is cosponsored by the Forest Products Society (FPS) and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).

The global market for plywood is projected to reach 223.4 million cubic meters by 2022, driven by recovering construction activity in most countries worldwide; rise in high value, high rise constructions; growing preference for plywood in interior design especially of floors, ceilings, and walls; and a healthy furniture industry, according to Plywood-Global Strategic Business Report 2016. Significance of plywood in the construction sector has increased substantially over the last decade due to the various benefits of plywood such as maintainability, strength-to-weight ratio and price.

Wood has a largely favourable environmental effect. A study of the National Research Programme recommends using wood more widely as a source of energy and as a building material. The study examined the overall environmental impact of wood in Switzerland, analyzing the value chain from cutting trees to recycling wood or burning it, including the manufacture of semi-finished products such as paper, boards and pellets for heating purposes. Wood manufacturing is a high profile industry in Switzerland and home to suppliers familiar in the U.S., such as IGP power coating, Michael Weinig machinery, Jowat adhesives, Swiss Chrono laminate panel and Lamello.
