An analysis from the Northern Forest Center has shown that wood pellet fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than half the amount fossil fuels do.
Partnering with SIG-NAL, a nonprofit dedicated to linking economic and environmental interests, the Center commissioned a study of the greenhouse gas impacts of heating buildings with state-of-the-art wood pellet boilers in the Northern Forest region of the U.S. Looking at nine Northern Forest pellet mills, SIG-NAL used data specific to the region's forest composition and harvest practices, as well as the pellet sourcing and manufacturing practices of the plants.

The program committee for the 2017 Advancements in Fiber-Polymer Composites Symposium is accepting abstracts to present until Tuesday, Nov. 15. The event, hosted by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and Forest Products Society, will take place May 16-18, 2017, in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Symposium provides a forum for experts from scientific, technical and industrial communication to exchange and disseminate information on the latest advances and future opportunities for fiber-polymer composites.
Presentations and posters on the following topics are welcome:
- Advanced reinforcements in fiber-polymer composites
- Biopolymer matrices
- Processing and drying of nanocellulose
- Novel additives and processing techniques
- Modification of natural fiber and nanocellulose for enhanced performance
- Recycling
- Future markets/applications

The Forest Products Society has announced the creation of a Southeast Asian membership section of the organization. The ASEAN Section of the Forest Products Society will support the forestry and wood industry by providing a forum for networking and exchange of scientific and technical information about the sustainable use of wood and other renewable cellulosic materials. The creation of the new section came in response to the 1.8 million people employed by the wood industry in Southeast Asia. The region generates close to $35 billion in export earnings annually, marking a significant global socioeconomic impact.

The Forest Products Society is pleased to announce that abstracts are now being accepted for the 71st International Convention. This premier event for professionals in the forest products industry, which will be held June 26-28, 2017 in Starkville, Mississippi, and hosted by the Mississippi State University's College of Forest Resources. The convention offers presenters a world-class platform to share their latest research, discoveries and advances in the industry.
The 2017 conference theme is "The Future of the Global Forest Products Industry," which will attract hundreds of scientists, design professionals, managers, decision makers and others from academia, government, nonprofit and private industry sectors to discuss the state of forest products research and learn about innovations in the field.

Along I-75 in Whitfield county, motorists can see smoke from what's called the Rocky Face fire. Georgia Forestry has two crews on scene cutting fire breaks, but no homes are in immediate danger.
