Building Products Digest
Engineered wood products have ancient ancient origins, with evidence of laminated wood found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs. The concept that boards could be sliced and bonded to produce a product that was better than the original wood was revolutionary.

When H.F.S. Morgan crafted his first namesake vehicle, in 1909, his product was modern: An ash frame affixed to a steel ladder-frame chassis under metal body panels was inline with English coach-built autos of the era. More than a century later, as sleek electric cars roll off robotically-assisted assembly lines elsewhere in the world, some of Morgan Motor Company's century-old woodworking tools are still in use at the brand’s Malvern Link factory in England's West Midlands.

Ecology is on everybody's minds these days. Sustainability is becoming a priority in many industries, and it's crucial for leaders to develop standards that help companies ensure they’re keeping to established best practices.
The emergent green building industry is proof of this. Shortsighted, business-as-usual construction methods yield high-rise fires, materials that don't last, buildings that harm the land they stand on and structures that waste energy throughout their lifecycles.

In a recent report on Nature Communications, Wentao Gan and a team of researchers at the departments of materials science and engineering in the U.S. have detailed the use of an ultrathin film of natural wood to create an audio speaker. The construct exhibited excellent mechanical properties including high tensile strength and increased Young's modulus. The properties of ultrathin thickness and exceptional mechanical strength allowed excellent acoustic properties with higher resonance frequency and greater displacement amplitude when compared to a commercial polypropylene diaphragm in an audio speaker.

Prefabrication is not a new concept for architects, but its usage is evidently on the rise. With today's limited spatial capacity and need for cost efficiency, the industrial strategy of architectural production has shifted towards an all-around-efficient approach, in some cases assembling projects in a matter of days or weeks.

Wood is a natural choice for constructing indoor swimming pools and ice arenas.
An effective insulator with a warm aesthetic, wood is particularly well suited to the demanding atmospheres of swimming pools — as well as ice rinks in arenas. Wood tolerates high levels of humidity, offers acoustic and thermal benefits, and absorbs and releases water vapor without compromising its structural integrity.
