Massive U.S. exports of industrial wood pellets to meet green energy goals in Europe is not a threat to the sustainability of U.S. Southern forests, says a new report from the pellet manufacturers. Drawing from U.S. government and available market data, the report was commissioned by the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, National Alliance of Forest Owners (NAFO) and the U.S. Industrial Pellet Association (USIPA) — three organzations representing the producers of wood pellets and their suppliers.

Sawmills in Europe have had substantially higher wood raw-material costs than sawmills in other parts of the world over the past ten years. The European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI), a volume-weighted price index comprising average softwood sawlog prices in nine of the largest log-consuming countries in Europe, tracked the global sawlog price trend fairly closely from 1995 to 2005.

Every five years, the U.S. Forest Service publishes a report summarizing the data collected through the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. The FIA data provide a snapshot of metrics surrounding the forests of today and extensive analysis of the data help to identify trends, as well as project how the forests will look in 10-20 years from now. Using statistical analysis to project into the future provides a foundation from which to evaluate the sustainability of current forest management policies.

The global wood pellets market was worth $6.2 billion in 2014. Due to increasing concerns about the utilization of non-renewable energy sources causing deterioration of the environment, alternative energy sources are sought. Wood pellets have proven to be a stellar substitute for fossil fuels and have helped curb greenhouse gas emissions considerably. The lower cost of wood pellets than other conventional fuels adds to the advantages of the utilization of the commodity for power and heat generation purposes.

The Indonesian government is facing renewed calls to grant greater management rights of forests to local communities as part of a wider strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A new report published by the Rainforest Action Network provides further evidence of the benefits of greater local land rights in conserving tropical forests. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo faces additional pressure to make wholesale reforms to Indonesia's land-management practices after devastating agricultural fires across the archipelago in recent months.
