From Sept. 28: From the street, the new seven-story "T3" building going up in Minneapolis looks a lot like an old warehouse: large repeating windows and weathered steel sheathing the color of brick. But it's a revolutionary structure, and the irony is that its cutting-edge nature rests on an old-school material — wood. When T3 opens this month, it will be the tallest modern wooden building in the United States. And to hear the architect behind the tower tell it, T3 is the future of urban construction.

From Oct. 12: Pushback rises on burning wood fiber in electric generating plants, as scientists and environmentalists question whether it is, indeed, carbon neutral.
A U.S. Senate committee is leaning toward labeling wood-fired power plants as carbon neutral. Panel manufacturers have complained in the past such actions would raise the cost of raw materials for wood products companies. The Energy Policy Modernization Act could become law within a few weeks. The bill is in the reconciliation process with a Congressional version. Senators from states heavily forested states, including Maine and Oregon, support the move.

From Oct. 7: The U.S. Lumber Coalition is welcoming a letter from 41 United States House Representatives supporting efforts to negotiate a new, stable, and sustainable Softwood Lumber Agreement to offset unfair Canadian lumber trade practices. The letter states that border measures against subsidized and unfairly traded lumber imports are critical for the U.S. lumber industry because Canadian timber is heavily subsidized and sold or contracted at pennies on the dollar compared to the free market, competitive pricing of U.S. timber of comparable quality.
