San Francisco Bay Area drivers could one day be tracked using a GPS-like device in their cars and taxed per miles driven — a scenario which is part of a proposed long-range study aimed at finding ways to reduce traffic and pollution, while also raising revenues. Under the plan, drivers would have to install trackers in their vehicle, and officials would tax drivers for every mile they travel. More

DigitalGlobe and GeoEye: The best of both worlds

Last week's announcement that DigitalGlobe will combine with GeoEye brings together two of the world's largest commercial satellite imaging companies in a deal valued at $453 million. The transaction was anticipated in light of dramatic cuts to the U.S. government's 10-year, $7.3 billion Enhanced View Contract that each company had been awarded. The valuation is low in comparison to that prior promised revenue stream; however, the final dollar figure from that contract is still pending and the combination of the companies will reduce reliance on that revenue stream. The National Geographical Information System, described by three officials who refused to be identified, will use existing datasets from the likes of Google and Microsoft (who are in on the discussions) as well as state data and data from private firms to build a kind of Google Maps, but with far more data layers, for India. While the FAA is moving ahead with plans for UAS/UAV to have regular access to U.S. airspace by 2015, a number of barriers remain. For UAVs to be treated like manned aircraft, their systems likely need to be qualified to the same standards as civil avioncs — this is a challenge, as each UAS has largely unique systems. UAS equipment standards are emerging, but threats to GNSS abound and defense/mitigation is required. More

The Coalition of Geospatial Organizations has asked Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jonathan Leibowitz to address the concerns of the geospatial community in its privacy report. In March 2012, the FTC released a report, "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change" providing recommended actions for business and policy makers to protect consumers' private information. More
