Traditional books on paper open a new chapter of success
The Guardian
A former tannery has been magicked into an arts venue, the lights have been dimmed, and a roomful of publishing executives are sitting on creaky wooden floors, cross-legged or knees scrunched up, school-assembly style. The canapes can wait: the group has gathered to listen to writers reading their latest, soon-to-be-published works — a heart-rending family memoir, a Jazz Age tale, the gangs of Los Angeles.
Grumbling, but not quitting: What authors really think of publishers
Agent Hunter
At the start of March, Jane Friedman and Harry Bingham launched the English-speaking world's most comprehensive survey of what authors think of the firms that publish them. They invited the views of traditionally published authors only, whether or not they had also self-published. They sought to create a survey that was both balanced and incisive: one that wouldn't shirk the questions that matter most to authors.
The most concerning element of Facebook's potential new power
Columbia Journalism Review
"Facebook has more power in determining who can speak and who can be heard around the globe than any Supreme Court justice, any king or any president." Those prescient words came from law professor Jeffrey Rosen way back in 2010. Five years later, the Times is willingly handing its censorship keys over to that king of kings.
Why self-promotion as an author doesn't work
Whimsydark
It's 2012. I'm sitting at a table in the front of the room, a microphone poised to capture my every word. At this local writing conference, I am considered a rock star. Everyone in the audience wants what I have — a three-book contract with a traditional publishing company. Their eyes are hungry, their pens poised over notebooks. We take a question from the crowd.
How typing is destroying your memory
Fast Company
Bad News: If you take notes in a meeting using your laptop, or if you create a to-do list using an app, you might be undermining your ability to recall the information later.
A recent study published in Psychological Science found that the pen is mightier than the keyboard when it comes to remembering what you just jotted down.

Nicholls tells Digital Minds: 'Showrooming is like shoplifting'
The Bookseller
Showrooming is just a "genteel form of shoplifting" author David Nicholls told an audience at the London Book Fair Digital Minds Conference.
Giving a keynote speech at the digital event ahead of the fair's official start, Nicholls spoke of the importance of physical bookshops, and criticized the practice of discovering a title in a bookshop only to buy it online instead, known as showrooming.
