Region II directors announce a GWA Connect gathering beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, June 12, at Applebee’s restaurant, 815 E Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA 19348 (610-444-8092). This Connect gathering will focus on sharing network opportunities and discussing the press preview opening of the Longwood Gardens Meadow Garden at 5 p.m. that evening.

The Society of Environmental Journalists offers professional journalists a fifth year of mini-grant opportunities for projects and entrepreneurial ventures related to reporting on the environment. To kick off the summer reading season, Amazon.com announced its fourth annual list of the Most Well-Read Cities in America. The ranking was determined by compiling sales data of all book, magazine and newspaper sales in both print and Kindle format from April 2013 to April 2014, on a per capita basis in cities with more than 100,000 residents.
Poynter Institute survey reveals 'disconnect' between journalists, educators

A recent survey by the Poynter Institute shows that working journalists and journalism professors aren't exactly on the same page when it comes to ranking the importance of multimedia and digital storytelling skills. Poynter's survey, "The Core Skills for the Future of Journalism," uncovered glaring differences regarding the importance that working journalists and journalism educators attach to multimedia skills, including AV editing, photography and graphic design.

People who come to my writing workshops always ask me the same thing: "Should I write for myself, or for the reader?" It's a tricky, loaded question, but I always answer it with one of my own: "Do you want to get published and be paid for it, or are you not really concerned about other people buying and reading your book?" Most people respond that they want to get their work published, have people read and enjoy it, and make a few bucks in the process.
