Twitter: Changing life for writers 140 characters at a time
New York Daily News

Creation through limitation is a concept that has long been familiar to writers. We see it through the persistent use of ancient poetic forms such as haiku, as well as the experiments of the Oulipo — a French-speaking writers' circle that can count Italo Calvino as an alumnus — in the 1960s. We still see it in many novels' exploitation of genre conventions.

Amazon struggles to crack publishing
The Wall Street Journal
Share

Amazon has had lots of success in book retailing. But cracking the publishing business hasn't been as easy. Take one of Amazon's biggest titles for fall, actress and director Penny Marshall's memoir "My Mother Was Nuts." In its first four weeks on sale, it has sold just 7,000 copies in hardcover, according to Nielsen BookScan. From Joel Friedlander: It's amazing how often this happens: I visit an author blog and, finding something interesting, I go looking for the "About" page. And when I get there, it's a total disappointment. Typically, there will be a couple of paragraphs of copy and a photo, but often there's not even that. For some reason, the Blogger.com platform seems particularly guilty in providing little in the way of an "About" page.

Books and educational toys can make a child smarter, but they also influence how the brain grows, according to new research presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. For many publishers, Amazon is the No. 1 place where their books are sold.
