GWA will be awarding the prestigious GWA Garden Media Awards to the top professional communicators in the lawn and garden genre for 2013. Pittsburgh presentation proposals due Dec. 16

The GWA Symposium Program Committee is accepting presentation proposals from speakers for the 2014 symposium to be held Aug. 8-11 in Pittsburgh. There is particular interest in proposals that address core competency topics developed by the GWA Education Committee. All online applications must be received no later than Dec. 16.

Supreme Court rejects Amazon appeal; New York affiliate program sales tax stands

A few years ago, states started passing laws requiring Amazon to pay sales tax if it offered affiliate marketing programs in their state, rather than only being required to pay them if it had physical facilities there. This resulted in Amazon cutting off its affiliate programs in any state that passed such a law. Amazon finally fought New York's law to the Supreme Court — and the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, meaning that the appeals court decision affirming the law will stand.
Amazon reveals quarter of Kindle e-book sales in US were for indie publishers

As many as a quarter of the top 100 Kindle books on Amazon.com are from indie publishers, according to data revealed at a trade presentation by the retailer. A chart detailing the 25 top-selling indie titles in 2012 was passed on by an audience member via Twitter. Though the term indie is broad, covering everything from self-published authors to publishing houses that fall outside the big six, the news has been interpreted as a victory for the go-it-alone author.

In the first weeks, she sold a few dozen copies — success for someone who just wanted to have her work read. In the next few months, she published several more manuscripts, and soon, the sales started piling up. By the end of the summer, Hocking had made enough money to quit her job.
