|Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG
Welcome to our 86th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
|Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
The world continues to be active geologically, keeping engineering geologists busy! There are good articles on landslides in Peru and Mississippi. There is a good follow-up on the Taal Volcanic eruption in the Philippines and much more.
Happy New Chinese New Year (year of the rat!) to all of our colleagues in China!
Be sure to download the new IAEG Newsletter #4 below!
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
To go to the website, click here. We have added the following too.
As you will notice, we have a new design and user-friendly search functions. We have three social media accounts, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, to post photos on the web (and short films) in the Photo Gallery of our website. We also have direct connection with IAEG Connector and Frontiers in Earth Science.
In the new website, there are no more restricted areas and it is not
necessary to register on the website. If you want to make changes to the
Commissions or National Groups or to report Congresses or Courses, you must
send the material to be posted on the website to email@example.com.
All members of the IAEG are urged to participate more actively in
updating the website and send photographs of construction sites and events
that may affect our association with a brief descriptive caption and with
the name of the author. Even webinars are welcome, and from now, even the
presentations in PowerPoint of projects and research with their results will be welcome. Please
send all material to firstname.lastname@example.org.

The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will take place from 20th to 24th of September 2020.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.
International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
A call for papers is currently underway. The deadline for submission of papers has been extended to Feb. 17, 2020.
Previously, no later than Feb. 14, full manuscript (four to eight pages in length, abstract included), shall be submitted to the conference organizing committee through the ISSMGE's
Conference Review Platform.
Those interested in submitting papers for the conference are kindly requested to visit the website above and register. The account credentials should be used to access the platform for
Conference topics are:
1. Weather and landslides.
2. Landslides and sismo-tectonic and volcanic activity.
3. Landslides and human activities.
4. Effects of Landslides with emphasis on infrastructure and
5. Landslides: Risk assessment and management.
6. Slope investigation and analysis.
11th Mining and Exploration Forum

Held since 2010, MINEX Kazakhstan is one of the best-regarded major mining events in the county. The Forum is annually supported by the Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development, the U.K. Department for International Trade, International and National Mining Associations, as well as mining industry leaders and Investors.
Cities on Volcanoes 11
On behalf of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with post graduate programme of “Environmental, Disaster and Crisis Management Strategies”(EDCM) and the Natural History Museum (University of Crete), are honored to invite you to participate in the Cities on Volcanoes 11. CoV11 is taking place, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, on 23-27 May, 2020.
It will be our pleasure to welcome you to Crete and give you the opportunity to visit Knossos (the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete called the oldest city of Europe), and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum(one of Europe’s most important museums with archaeological finds from all over Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island’s history).
Additionally, we will organize several field trips to Methana, Santorini volcano, Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark, The Minoan Villa with the Lilies, etc. We strongly believe that Crete, considered as one of the top global tourist destinations, having easy access and the appropriate infrastructure, will fulfill all your expectations for a successful meeting.
To find out more about the CoV 11, please follow these important links: CoV11 Programme, Important Dates, Registration, Call for Abstracts and The Venue.

International Underground Structures Conference (IUSC)
International Transportation & Infrastructure Conference (ITIC)
International Sustainable Structures Conference (ISSC)
The 4th GeoMEast 2020 International Congress & Exhibition under the theme of "Sustainable Construction in Africa and Middle East" will be held in Greater Cairo, Egypt, from November 08 to 12, 2020. GeoMEast2020 is hosted by SSIGE and HBRC under the auspices of the Egyptian Government and supported by a number of leading international professional organizations.
Recent rapid construction in Africa and Middle East have provided great opportunities for structure, bridge, material, transportation, pavement, geotechnical, geological, tunnel, geosynthetics, infrastructure and all engineers to use their knowledge and talents to solve many challenging problems and cutting-edge technologies. GeoMEast 2020 will provide a showcase for recent developments and advancements in design, construction, and safety inspections of sustainable structures, underground structures and transportation infrastructures, and offer a forum to discuss and debate future directions for the 21st century. You will have the opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world for technical, scientific and commercial discussions.

The Landslide Blog
It is well-established that irrigation by farmers can be the cause of landslides, especially in areas with low rainfall totals. A very nice study was published in Nature Geoscience that uses a long archive of satellite data to examine landsliding on river cliffs in Peru. The study area, the Vitor and Siguas valleys in southern Peru, is hyper-arid, which has meant that historically agriculture has been limited to the flood plains of the incised river channels.

In Mississippi, attempts are underway to lower the lake level behind the Oktibbeha County Lake dam, which is described as being in imminent danger of collapse. Reports suggest that an inspection of the dam indicated that a significant landslide had occurred on the downstream face.
Taal volcano, known for its picturesque crater lake, erupted suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 12, forcing evacuations of nearby villages. Since the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 12, Taal volcano in the Philippines has been erupting, with the Philippine government issuing an alert level of 4 (out of 5), indicating a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.

It will soon be the first anniversary of the failure of the Feijão tailings dam at Brumadinho in Brazil. The official expert panel released its report on the disaster — there is a website dedicated to the findings, which includes the full report in English and all of the appendices.
