Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG

|
Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|
Welcome to the 113th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
IAEG is part of FedIGS (Federation of International GeoSocieties), and our annual meeting will be virtual on September 10, 2020, instead of face to face in Warsaw, Poland. The president, past president and secretary general of each organization meet to discuss ways of cooperating with each organization.
With the monsoon rains continuing to hit Asia, two major landslides in China have blocked major rivers. Also, a landslide in a coal mine has trapped a miner in India.
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will be postponed until spring 2021.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
area.
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.

The IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics has launched an international survey on geoethics.
The goal is to get some indications about the geoscience community's perception of the importance of the ethical and social aspects in geoscience research and practice.
All the members of the geoscience community are invited to fill in the questionnaire "Geoethics in the Geooscience" at:
https://form.jotformeu.com/93223788145362
Compilers can decide to fill in the questionnaire anonymously. In any case, no personal data or information related to private life are requested.
This international survey has been partially funded by the IUGS - International Union of Geological Sciences through the annual allocation to the IAPG.

In response to COVID-19, Singapore has decided to postpone ARC13 to Nov. 15-19, 2021. ARC13 is co-organized by Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (Singapore) and The Geological Society of Hong Kong. The organizers offer an ideal opportunity and platform for professionals from the international engineering geology community to exchange the latest experiences and ideas on engineering geology, particularly on the conference theme "Engineering Geology for Sustainable Resource and Infrastructure Development." In addition to the technical programs, we will organize short courses, workshops, technical visits, exhibitions, as well social programs. We will also offer attractive programs for young researchers and students, such as Young Engineering Geologist Session.

International Geological Congress
Given the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears unlikely that the 36th IGC can be held as rescheduled to November 2020. Accordingly, the Local Organizing Committee requested and the IGC Committee (IGCC) approved revised dates of 16-21 August 2021. Scheduling was constrained by the limited availability of the venue site in New Delhi in 2021. The IUGS Executive Committee and its constituent groups will work hard to ensure the success of the rescheduled Congress.
Under consideration by the IUGS Executive Committee is the call for an extraordinary session of the IUGS-IGC Council, possibly to be held in Paris, France in early November for the purpose of completing essential business, such as the election of a new executive committee. If held, the agenda and number of participants will be limited with most delegates participating via teleconferencing. Inquiries are just being made. No announcement will be made until facilities, location, and dates are confirmed and approved by the EC.

Cities on Volcanoes 11
On behalf of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with post graduate programme of “Environmental, Disaster and Crisis Management Strategies”(EDCM) and the Natural History Museum (University of Crete), are honored to invite you to participate in the Cities on Volcanoes 11. CoV11 is taking place, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, Sept. 25-30, 2020.
It will be our pleasure to welcome you to Crete and give you the opportunity to visit Knossos (the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete called the oldest city of Europe), and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (one of Europe’s most important museums with archaeological finds from all over Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island’s history).
Additionally, we will organize several field trips to Methana, Santorini volcano, Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark, The Minoan Villa with the Lilies, etc. We strongly believe that Crete, considered as one of the top global tourist destinations, having easy access and the appropriate infrastructure, will fulfill all your expectations for a successful meeting.
Based on our ultimate evaluation on June 29, we cautiously feel more optimistic and have decided to hold the COV11 conference in Crete on September 25-30, 2020, as an hybrid event combining both virtual and physical attendance.
To find out more about the CoV 11, please follow these important links: CoV11 Programme, Important Dates, Registration, Call for Abstracts and The Venue.

The Landslide Blog
Heavy monsoon rainfall continues to drive landslide losses across Nepal. As in all disasters, a key aspect of an appropriate response is highly quality spatial data. In the summer of 2019 the National Emergency Operation Centre, a part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, launched a new disaster management portal to provide high quality data.
