The IAFC wants Congress to get money directly to local fire departments by dramatically increasing funding for both the AFG and SAFER programs. The House of Representatives-passed HEROES Act (H.R. 6800) includes $500 million each for the AFG and SAFER grant programs to help fire departments respond to COVID-19 and save firefighter jobs. For years, I have studied and observed great leadership, teaching and coaching leaders and organizations around the world on the qualities that make leaders effective. One thing I've learned through that experience: when crisis hits, the best leaders are ready to act courageously and boldly. Conflict between co-workers is a fact of life. If you work with people who care about the mission of the work and who are invested in doing it well, there's a good chance there will be conflict when each person tries to offer ideas and contribute to group decisions.
Even though conflict can come from a good place, it's definitely a challenging part of work life, and it can lead to the rapid demotivation of your employees. In a virtual setting, poorly managed conflict can push teams to the breaking point.

Under-communication is a consistent problem in nearly every business. You can solve that by taking ownership of the communication happening around you. Most under-communication is inadvertent. People are simply unaware of the gap between what's in their mind and what's in yours, and you suffer from that same lack of awareness. Fortunately, the solution is remarkably simple.

In my work as a leadership coach, I spend an enormous amount of time with top corporate leaders and successful entrepreneurs. One trait that the best of them seem to share is an open-door policy. An open-door policy is a great leadership practice at any time, but it's even more important when your people are scattered and working remotely. Whether your open door takes the form of a video conference feed, a text or phone line, or another mode of communication, here are some of the top ways it can help the people on your team.

As increasing competition, new technologies and evolving customer expectations continue to disrupt nearly every industry, and business leaders are turning to innovation as a way to keep their companies relevant. People have been trying to crack the code of leadership development success for a long time. Unfortunately, even though it has been studied more, written about more and more people have tried to improve their leadership skills, the results have often been lackluster. I believe there are reasons for this fact. I've created a very economical way to share why it has happened and what is missing.

As recently as February, it was easy to think that what happened in the "outside world" was not relevant to the business world. That's no longer true. Lines between work, home and community are blurred, because our homes are our workplaces and our workplaces are in our homes.
Even essential workers who work on-site for the most part go home at the end of their shift and stay there. Even as cities and states begin to open up, people will still spend most of their time inside for now.

In today's fast-paced, complex world, leaders need mirrors. The mirrors they need, however, go far beyond reflecting their physical appearance. Leaders need mirrors that reflect their behavior and the impact their behavior has on others. That requires much more than a piece of glass with a thin layer of metallic silver on the back. Leaders need mirrors to interpret data and feed it back to them in a practical form.

Although COVID-19 is clearly a catastrophe, it offers what every social scientist craves: a "natural experiment" that allows us to compare different responses to similar shocks. We have already learned much about what does and doesn't work in tackling the virus itself. We can also glean profound lessons about the role of leaders.
