Announcing the 2013 ANF Nursing Research Grants

IAFN is once again collaborating with the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) to offer a $5,000 research grant to a forensic nurse researcher. The grant application is open to all of IAFN's global members.
This award is part of the 2013 Nursing Research Grants which offers up to 29 nursing research awards with totaling more than $200,000 to beginner and experienced nurse researchers. Information about all of the awards is available at: www.ANFonline.org. The application deadline is May 1, 2012
Free 6-week online SANE Sustainability Course

IAFN, in partnership with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is excited to announce that registration is open for U.S.-based SANE Program Managers to attend our free, 6-week online course to address SANE Sustainability. Taught by nationally recognized experts, Jennifer Pierce-Weeks, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P and Jenifer Markowitz ND, RN, WHNP-BC, SANE-A, this course will provide education and skill building on issues of program sustainability, including budgeting, staffing, and collaboration, as well as ongoing technical assistance and capacity building to SANE Program Managers. The following profiles provide an overview of syphilis morbidity in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The profiles consist of figures and tables of data on syphilis from the U.S. states and territories through 2011. Case report data are the foundation of STD surveillance systems, and are collected by state and local health departments.

Evidence exists regarding the full prevention of hepatitis C virus transmission to hemodialysis patients by implementing standard precautions. However, little information is available regarding the frequency with which hospitals have adopted evidence-based practices for preventing HCV infection among hemodialysis patients. conducted a cross-sectional survey among nurses in Calabria region in Italy in order to acquire information about the level of knowledge, the attitudes and the frequencies of evidence-based practices that prevent hospital transmission of HCV.

Here's a new, and sobering, government statistic: Experts estimate that the number of sexually transmitted infections among Americans now totals more than 110 million. In two studies published online in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases, estimates of the prevalence and cost of treating STDs are tallied. One of the more concerning findings was that there are nearly 20 million new infections each year, and half of those occur among young people.
