Greenville Health System released a statement Wednesday in response to an incident July 13 at Laurens County Memorial Hospital. “Every patient who visits an emergency department at any one of our hospitals receives a medical screening exam to determine if they have an emergent medical condition. If such a condition exists, the patient is stabilized within the capabilities of that hospital.

When a Laurens County woman was taken to the hospital after reporting a brutal sexual assault last week, there was no nurse specially trained in dealing with rape victims there to examine her.
Instead, the traumatized woman was given the option of going to another hospital about 45 miles away for that kind of nurse — a situation the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office called “unacceptable.”

Nurses are natural patient advocates, brokers of information and resources for optimal patient care, wellness and outcomes. The nurse can truly make a world of difference in the patient experience. Having said that, nurses may also occasionally find themselves in the role of patient. This can bode well for the nurse's own care in terms of self-advocacy, but also for the development of empathy for what patients encounter as they navigate the labyrinthine healthcare system.
